The problem is that there's an internal flange on the original head that prevents it from screwing back onto the barrel once the LED module has been screwed into place. I can't tell you when the design was modified though. **Q: Can I use this on my mag charger?** A: This is meant to operate from cells from around 4v to 9v, you may cause some damage from any other power source **Q: Does this work with 3D battery Maglite torches or is there a different version for that ?** A: Sorry I don’t have an answer for you. I have a suggestion instead. And being a curious person I stuck in my 3cell and it works fine. Better than fine it’s dazzling..... not like the bulb replacement as they are only 300/360 lumens this replaces the bulb and reflector in one go. And Is 1000lumins. I will be getting the Terralux to go in my 6cell.... **Q: Will this work with a 2d maglite?** A: Sorry I really don't know. A 2d maglite would be 3volts and the 4d which I use is 6 volt. I would say that I use this at least 3-4 times a week in my job and it's still working fine.
