THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON GRIZZARD'S LITTLE ACRE

*by R***K on Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2018*

Lewis didn't have nuttin agin Chicago exceptin he didn't like the cold weather, the food, the dress, the spoken word, dialect and you couldn't play golf 24/7 365. Short of the above, his job at the Sun Times and the city was just fine. He finally called Jim Minter, his mentor, substitute daddy, and long suffering friend. He asked Minter if he could come back to Atlanta. He promised to never leave the south again if the good lord and Minter would grant him this one last request. There was not a spot available in the sports department but he could write a daily column for the Atlanta Constitution. I'll take it! And of course the rest became history. So helpem UGA, Grizzard was a man of his word. He dug in deep and never left God's country. His Gucci's were filled with Georgia red clay forever. What a pleasure to be able to step back in time a few decades and read what a good ole Southern Boy was thinking and feeling about the times he lived in. Such wit, humor and honesty along with factual opinions that are spot on. In this book, he heralds the slowly passing of the daily newspaper and the influence it had on our daily lives when it truly was local. He bemoaned the passing of the individuality of styles in reporting and the special color the locals portrayed to its communities. Equally important is the fact that the dailys taught the journalist to prepare and layout a story. From Moreland to Athens onto Atlanta and then to Chicago, Lewis learned much about the profession he had dedicated his life to and beyond divorces, law suits and other low blows, he found himself. And in doing so, continued to groom himself into being one of the best and funniest writers that ever walked God's little green acre known as the SouthOur Poet Dixiolaureat had found his way home on a wing and a prayer. And from the moment his Delta flight touched down at Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta, Lewis nailed his image in the hearts of millions of loyal readers. Once again, a good ole southern boy from Moreland, GA had made good. And aren't we lucky that he did?

    Miss him!

I have been a fan of Lewis Grizzard for years and so enjoyed his newspaper column. I thought I had read all of his books but found two more that I had not read including this one. This was a good book and if you know his work you could really relate to this book as it was basically a story about how he got started in the business. It was enjoyable to read as well as I had several friends who were journalism majors back in the day and I could understand how exciting it must have been when they started their jobs working for newspapers. Great book and I would highly recommend it.

Humor and honesty at its finest

A great book, written well. Not only did it have a slice of humor, but gave me a lot of insight as to the newspaper business. As with most things, it is not as easy as it looks. Author Grizzard make this very clear. In addition to his Keen wit, I appreciated his absolute honesty not only about himself but others.
