Review: This is a Very Good Fan - My search for a quiet fan led me, finally, to this fan. It was the only one that really claimed to be very quiet. Mission accomplished. On the lowest setting, I can watch something while others are sleeping. The fan sound, at 35 dB, is not an issue. I have it near my head, and don't hear anything. My hearing is quite excellent, thank you very much. It does get louder as air movement increases; but it is not a roaring, rattling sound. It is the sound that is made by moving air, not the sound of poorly designed machinery. Air movement is beyond criticism. The fan looks much better than I thought it would. I could easily write ten pages on the virtues of this fan; but others have written many long reviews. You have to like something a lot or to hate it to write a long review. Negative reviews for this fan fall into several categories for me. Unrealistic expectations is my first choice. If you want something that you can knock around, use in the garage, and abuse; or if you like to ignore instructions, this is not the fan for you. Maybe Harbor Freight has something cheap, heavy, and old-tech with a large dose of unreliability that can work for you. If you are not good at reading instructions, or are in a hurry, or are under the influence, or assemble things by slapping them together, you will do yourself a favor by letting someone else assemble the fan for you. It really is easy; but you will do best if you have the touch. Yes, it is easy to break the small parts if you are not careful. Frankly, the weakest point of the fan is the instructions, both for assembly and operation; but if you slow down and read them carefully, and think it through, they are adequate. If you insist on moving the fan around without regard to its construction, do not be surprised if it does not hold up. I am talking to the folks who buy fine glassware and end up with most of it broken after a few years. This fan is a technical achievement. You take care of it like you do anything of value. Some people have a vinyl or CD collection that looks like new after many years. This is the fan for those people. Some folks use their music collection as frisbees, coasters, Salvador Dali models, and random floor decorations. This is not the fan for them. someone criticized the fan because the mount broke. If you move it around, hold the handle and also hold the base upright rod that the fan mounts to. The base is very heavy for a reason. The second weak point of the fan is that it should not be moved around a lot by simply picking it up by the handle. This applies only to the floor model. I can't speak for the desktop model. Just support it carefully like you would anything else of value that you own. The concept should not be revolutionary; but some folks think that a fan can be hauled around like a toolbox. Some can; but you can usually hear them running in the other room. The control panel on the fan deserves special mention. It is intuitive, effective, beautiful, and easy to see and manipulate. The unusual angle is actually easy to fall in love with for its looks and functionality. I, as a person who embraces the technological achievements of recent years, do not have a problem with LED lights. The very well-designed set on this control panel seems quite appropriate to me. If you can't stand light, you have options; but don't expect the rest of the world to miss out on the benefits of great design because you haven't figured out how to get to sleep. If you are going to have a pillow fight or a wild party, put the fan in a safe place. It is not designed to the standards of a soccer net. As an industrial engineer and an electronics hobbyist, I appreciate this fan for many other reasons; but I don't want this review to become a tome. I will say that I purchased it as much out of curiosity as out of hope that it might actually meet expectations. The German design gave me confidence. A few hours after a flawless assembly process, thorough testing, and evaluation, I ordered another one. When I saw that the price had dropped significantly, I changed my order quantity to two. Somebody actually complained about a price decrease in one of the reviews. This fan, according to the instructions is not for extremely humid locations. They also say to use a dry cloth to clean it. Based on some complaints about a rusty protective grid, that seems like sound advice. Final note: disassembly for cleaning. I see no reason why disassembly should result in damage to the cage or the plastic ring that holds it together, or to the rather delicate plastic attachment hardware. When you clean your stemware, it requires more careful handling than your coffee mug. This fan will not weather the process like one of the other cheap fans that are available everywhere. On the other hand, it is not as difficult and delicate as tying fishing flies or handling rare stamps.
Review: Good quite fan with a few caveats, Overall I am satisfied - I recently just got the fan 5 speed fan. First, I will monitor for rust on the guard, but seeing the reviews of rust are all from high humidity areas (Hawaii, Florida, etc), wish more people would put where they are from when reviewing something that has finish defects like this. I am from SLC UT, low humidity, dry environment. Other than cars rusting due to salt sprayed on the road during the winter, I have never seen anything else rust here in the 40 years I have been here. That being said, the fan so far is great, decent wind movement and VERY quiet. I have several fans due to liking the feeling of a breeze inside. Yes my wind machine does move more air, but at a MUCH louder penalty. A few things that I could not find elsewhere. First, this fan is controlled by an IC. That being said, if you use it with an AC inverter, generator, or the like, it has to be a pure sine wave inverter, using a clipped or maybe (stress maybe) a modified sinewave will easily burn it up. I say maybe on the modified as I am not going to risk burning it up to find out. But other fans with logic will be damaged when anything other than a pure sinewave inverter is used. Another thing, and Jeff J Dunn hit on it during his one star review. The fans control board powers up in a nominally off state, IE, if power is removed and reapplied, you must “turn it on” and when turned on it starts in the med fan position. That being said, if you plan on using a KASA. TPlink, WEMO or other smart outlet it will not work, since when it turns on, the fan will stay off, IE defeating the purpose. For those of us like me who run it off a battery bank/ inverter/ solar, here are wattage requirements using my kill-a-watt for monitoring. Silent= (which is a waste of energy in my book as the airflow is so low) 11W, Low= 39W, Med= 49W, High= 60W, Turbo= 67W. Compare this to the wind machine which is a simply motor driven fan with no real logic, operates with smart outlets and draws 70/85/100W (L/M/H). This data may impact your purchase, so its better to know ahead of time. As many other pointed out, the remote does not come with a battery, but CR2032 batteries are dirt cheap and most people will keep a few around since you typically get 10 or so for $4-5 on desertcart easily. Not going to knock the vendor for not providing them, but its good to know up front and the remote is not needed for operation. The fan also comes completely disassembled (the cage and blade are not even mounted to the motor, mine came with instructions but its so easy to put together, they are not needed. The only odd ball thing is something that is molded to the center nut of the blade shaft, the threads here are reverse threaded, so think backwards on this threading ONLY. All others are standard thread rotation.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How hard is it to take the front of the cage off to clean the blades?**
A: Very easy, you can actually unscrewed cage slip off each parts and clean each parts. That was a pleasant surprise to me.

**Q: can i purchase a new stand for this fan? i melted mine!**
A: The bigger question is can you get replacement parts, including a stand.

**Q: Can this be jerry-rigged to wall mount? I want this fan in a wall mounted utilization.**
A: The base of this fan is it's weakest link. The base is plastic and round, and is approx. one foot in diameter. In fact, every surface on this entire fan is plastic, except the wire cage around the fan blades. Nothing to attach to for jerry-rigging. It's adequate for what it is designed for, and that's for sitting on a horizontal surface. You'd need a shelf to support this fan off of a wall.

**Q: Does this recline both forward and from side to side if needed?**
A: The fan can be pointed upward or downward within some reasonable range. It is also an oscillating fan, and when this feature is engaged it sweeps left and right over an angle that is typical for oscillating fans.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Little Louder Than Predecessor
*by T***H on October 20, 2020*

This is a great fan. It pushes the most air of any pedestal fan, by far, and is super quiet, though I find its predecessor (VU551) to be slightly more quiet. Something to note on these fans... There is a knob on the lower part of the motor housing, below the controls on the rear side, to keep the neck with the controls stable. If you move the fan around, make sure to ALWAYS pick it up below that knob, from the silver extension piece. My older fan's knob broke from lifting it by the curved control area. So grab the pipe instead if you want to avoid that. I know people complain of rust, but I would routinely take apart the cage, bring it outside and hose off the dust. I let it air dry and never had a rust issue. The "silent sleep mode" is basically useless. It lowers the fan so much to be silent, that there's hardly any breeze. The fan is plenty quiet on it's own on the low setting. Even though this fan performs well, it is cheaply made. It looks nice, but all of the plastic parts wear down and are easy to break. So be extra gentle when handling it. Is it worth the price? Yes, for around$100. Amazon routinely adjusts the price, so keep an eye out. I caught it at $95 a week ago. Now it's up to $165 again, from $135 a few days earlier. Fall/Winter are definitely the best times to catch a deal on this fan. We live in a disposable society, so don't expect it to last forever. My last one lasted 5 years and most of the parts are the same. You WILL NOT find a better performing fan that is this quiet. It's not like a Lasko fan that sounds like a tornado. The "turbo" mode on this fan is more quite than the low setting on my Lasko pedestal fan. You get what you pay for, just don't over pay.
