I am a retired teacher and have seen many children's books. I wrote a picture book myself and drew/painted illustrations. This book is a gem. It teaches young and older humans to gather information and cross check information in order to develop a truthful conclusion. The graphics are well chosen. I would have chosen less harsh freckled faces than what I see in the book. I also would have included multicultural children/people. I love the cave and ship image. It was fun doing "I spy with my little eye" with my grandson. The book is written well and systematically teaches the importance of evaluating what you hear in the news and social media as truth or lies. I think the level is perfect for children and students ages 10-18. It is also useful for older teens and and young adults. Ok, adults that lack the knowledge and skills of picking out truth in the media cesspool would benefit from this book. It see how it would aid in teaching adults how to evaluate what is read or heard in the media/social media platforms. David, great job writing this book! Some Illustrations could have been better illustrated and chosen. Thank you!!!!

Although David Pakman wrote this book for children, grownups will enjoy it, too. Yes, it teaches kids important critical-thinking skills that will prepare them for a ceaseless, lifelong barrage of misinformation, false claims, and outright lies. But adults will appreciate some of the underlying humor and even use the book as a handy cheat sheet to remember its primary lessons: how to ask the right questions, look for evidence, and detect lies. To inspire children to learn those lessons, the author introduces Daniel, “a curious young boy who loves solving mysteries” and creatively teaching readers how to use their “critical thinking superpowers” of observation, questioning, and reasoning to make sense of the world around them. He does this through creative exercises that encourage readers to examine claims about aliens from outer space, ghosts, hidden treasures, unicorns, and more. The book itself is clearly and artfully written for the targeted age group and features colorful, albeit incongruous and uncredited, illustrations. If you’re looking for a book that teaches the children in your life “how to analyze information, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively,” as promised on the back cover, Think Like a Detective is a great start.

I've been a fan of David Pakman for years now. Never miss a show or a Bonus Show (where he wants to make money but everybody else that makes money to fund themselves is bad). So when he announced that he was writing a children's book, I was so excited! When I first showed my son the book, he recognized the author's name and excitedly said "Mama, that's the YouTuber you always watch!" He was super excited to read this book as he loves books and anything to do with YouTube. My son loved it! He answered every single question asked in the book, came up with explanations of how someone could think one way or another, how to find out if something was true, and just overall how to not just accept something someone says as the truth. He especially loved the part that talked about facts vs. opinion. As for me, I loved the concept and the questions asked. I think it's such an important topic to teach our children so they don't grow up gullible and an easy target for misinformation. However, the quality and layout of the book was disappointing. I wanted to love it, but as an avid children's book reader (my son and I love reading), I feel like it had so much potential but was not given the attention to detail children's books require. The book's layout felt more like a guidebook for parents and teachers to follow when talking to a kid about critical thinking rather than a fun informational book for kids. The bullet points and long paragraphs were hard to read and there were some noticeable errors in the text. The drawings were not my favorite, they felt inconsistent and the different styles threw me off. I would have rather had the same style of art throughout the whole book, although my son really liked that the little boy with brown hair 'looked like him'. The concept of this book has so much potential to be an amazing children's book and an important tool for adults to teach children about critical thinking skills. I really hope David takes in the audience's constructive criticism and makes a new and improved version. When we finished the book, my son asked 'Can we get his next one?!' I assured him we would get the next one...once it's written!

This is an excellent non-fiction book that is both educational, while at the same time highly engaging. This book fills a real need in teaching critical thinking skills to young children. It presents situations that children will find either funny or pertinent, then gives them knowledge and questions to investigate the situation. The book wisely lets children draw their own conclusions to these situations, based on possible answers to questions. This is a book that can be reread and remain enjoyable. Reading level is going to work best for the average 4th - 8th grader, but younger children will enjoy & benefit having this book read to them. The book was richly illustrated with full color pictures on the page opposite the text. One minor criticism, I think the book would be better with a more natural eye look, rather than the eyes opened wide look that was used in the book. A warning, AI created guides are being sold along side this book, these guides were not created by the author of this book, and have little to do with this book.

Really nice scenarios to talk through with the kid in your life. My nephew was really engaged the whole time and asked great questions. He's 6 and seemed to be about the right age for it. The art in the book is AI but the message of the book is so good I could overlook that. Great critical thinking exercise.
