essential product for a desktop pc
I had been looking for a memory card reader for my new PC build for some time, the main issue i had was do i go for a 3.5 size or 5.25 size? Asaka do supply card readers for both sizes, as do many other manufacturers. I deceided on the 3.5 size in the end as it would give me good flexibility with my build. as it happens it is currently installed in a larger bay using a 5.25 adapter but its sitting pretty just underneath my optical drive.I am very happy with the purchase it was primarily done to give me quick access to memory cards i have for my various devices. My new motherboard has a USB3 3.0 front header so i also wanted to take advantage of that. some models of memory card reader either only have a USB 3.0 through cable to the back port or only have it on the USB 3.0 hub at the front and standard USB 2 speeds for the card reader. it appears there is some confusion between models that people have bought. this version the AK-ICR-14 has a simple one plug internal install to the USB 3 header. the previous model the AK-ICR-13 which looks virtually identical does not this requires plugging in to a rear USB 3 port. which is a bit daft in my opinion. The install was very straightforward. and upon rebooting my windows 7 64 bit computer no drivers were needed no other install of software the new drives were sat there ready to receive a card. If i had one complaint it would be how the cards feel being inserted and how they sit, they do have the tendency to jut out quite a fair bit. other reviewers have mentioned the pins inside have bent, luckily i haven't had this issue. I currently only use the MMC/SD and Micro SD slot so we shall see how we progress. Transfer speeds have been very quick whether doing a simple copy and paste or opening a file. much more convenient now than the method i had before which involved connecting the fiddly USB cable for my Fuji-film s4200 and powering it up.in summary i found the product to be one of the best looking and simplest models to install and good value for money.

The one you're after for USB3
After much looking about on amazon and the internet, this is the device you are looking for if you are after true USB3 transfer speeds from both the card reader and the front USB port. There is another very similar looking Akasa product that has a USB3 port, but the card reader runs at USB2. I had an older USB2 Akasa unit for several years and never had a problem with it, so I was happy to go with another Akasa product. The product came in a retail box complete with mounting screws and a white faceplate (if you don't want the black one that's attached to the unit by default.) The USB3 cable has the blue USB3 header connector at one end and is fitted directly into the unit via a rubber grommet, so the cable cant be knocked or detached from the unit. I have it connected to an Intel DZ77RE-75K motherboard and I get the same performance from the front USB3 port on the unit as I do on the USB3 ports that are integral with the motherboard. I have a couple of old CF cards that I use in my old DSLR camera and I've had no problem using these (although the cards are a few years old so are relatively slow. I also have a Lexar Professional SDHC card (type 10) and the transfer speed from this using the SD card reader compared with the older USB2 unit is very fast indeed. As a rough indication, transferring approx. 50 7MB jpg images on the old reader could take 10 minutes, with the new reader its about 30 - 40 seconds.hope you find this helpful.

Excellent internal card reader
The first impressions were that this was a quality product. Full retail packaging, complete with screws, white bezel (the card reader is fitted with a black bezel) & even an instruction leaflet. It installed in about 2 minutes and the USB3 header is so easy to plug in to the motherboard. The cable length should be more than adequate for most motherboard/case combinations.Reads my SD, SDHC, MicroSD & MicroSDHC without issue and seems to be very fast compared to my old USB2 reader. The USB3 socket is a bonus and is USB2 compatible.Would give it 5 stars but cannot yet comment on its reliability.I shall be buying these in future for all new builds.

USB 3.0 Card Reader
Purchased this along with aInateck PCI-E to USB 3.0 2-Port PCI Express Card with 2 Rear USB3.0 Hosts and Internal USB 3.0 20PIN Connectorto allow the use of a USB 3.0 card reader to replace a defective USB 2.0 card reader, well built and cards (SD & Micro SD the only ones have used) fit in firmly and easily. Operates fast, all in all a great improvement and simple to fit with the USB 3.0 PCI card (purchased as the only 3.0 header on the motherboard was already used for the front USB 3.0 sockets on the casing) Good combination.

Works well and has been reliable
Purchased this item to replace an ebay version of the same which I had trouble with recently. As with most of these expansion slots, it has a blue USB3 connector into the motherboard or USB 3 card. You will need to ensure you have one of these before use.It was much better than my previous one and this worked first time on my Windows8 and now 10.I have secured it my case using a 5.25 to 3.5 inch adapter.I have no complaints and can recommend this to yourselves.

Works well
Plugs into motherboard USB3 header, so make sure you have one or buy a suitable adapter.Installed on a Windows 7 machine and works like a dream. Been a few weeks now and no stability issues. Cant go wrong with it.No additional cables required, just make sure you have a 3.5" slot in your case for it to slot into - and check you have the fittings behind the slot to secure it otherwise you may need to buy a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter.
