Yamaha YDS-120 Digital Saxophone

What a treat. I played the sax through middle, high school and some of college, and continue to play casually. Living in an apartment, playing the real thing is basically not an option. So, my first solution to that problem was to grab an Aerophone AE-10, not only to keep my fingers loose but also out of curiosity for the additional sounds. (The YDS did not exist at that time). The Aerophone is superior when it comes to additional sounds, but it lacks a decent sax sound, and while the fingerings translate decently well, it's clearly just pressing buttons rather than trying to emulate the real thing. And that's perfectly fine, but I picked up the YDS-120 for two reasons: the more realistic feeling and the sax sounds. It's not perfect, of course. The sounds are clearly fake, especially through the sub-par built in speaker. You will want headphones or an amp if you care about sound quality. But the feel is so much better than the Aerophone in terms of mimicking a real sax. It still does feel like a fancy expensive toy, but for me, it's a joy to use and fits my needs quite well. I don't feel the need to obtain any more digital saxes after these two: the Aerophone is the superior wind controller, while the YDS does a better job at emulating the sax feel, which would make it a better practice tool and is what I grab when I want to play music specifically written for sax. Other thoughts: I would have liked it to come with a case, but I found one on Amazon by a third party that works fine. It won't replace a real sax at any serious gigs unless you're going for a digital sound - which can totally work in plenty of scenarios. I'd say give it a shot if you want a quiet practice tool.

My son loves this, and the rest of the house loves it more. He can practice as often as he wants with headphones without bothering his siblings. He also seems to enjoy the different voices. As the parent of a budding musician, anything that makes practicing fun (and not distracting/annoying to the rest of the house) is money well spent.

Top line: It EATS batteries, so get some rechargeable ones. The high D, E, & F keys and the low B & Bb keys can be unreliable and the octave key is difficult to master. It's light, short enough for a normal suitcase, and feels rugged so it's ready to travel. The speakers are not great so expect to use headphones, but I'm guessing you're like me and looking for a silent practice piece, and this does that work nicely. It's mostly a great little practice saxaphone to help with fingering and memorization. Don't expect it to help with embouchure, because it won't. Good volume control, semi-decent sounds that approximate a saxophone enough to get by. It's fun to play and practice with but this is not a reliable enough instrument for concerts or other gigs. For the price range it's a great practice tool

I was enjoying this instrument greatly until tonight. I have had it since last Christmas. Tonight out of the blue, while I was teaching myself a new song, it just stopped playing. I noticed that the low battery indicator was blinking. So I changed the batteries with fresh 1ks and nothing. It has never been dropped or had anything spilled on it. It is in perfect conditition. But nothing. It was a gift so hopefully the warranty was purchased and it has not expired. Not happy at all right now.

Not bad,not great either.signal path in between notes is noticable and I don't even play horns just want to learn.Good thing Philly has alot of horn players.

La verdad es muy bueno para practicar, se siente de calidad y realmente es funcional…. Le doy 4 estrellas por los siguientes puntos negativos: No viene con cargador por lo que hay que comprar uno aparte, las pilas se acaban en un abrir y cerrar de ojos y el sonido es un poco flojo, de ahí en fuera todo bien 😎

Had an EWI Solo before this and even though it had more sounds and functions, I prefer using the YDS120. It is a lot more enjoyable using the movable key’s similar to the saxaphone. The EWI had static keys that were touch sensitive and did not move.
