is the wire 100% copper to just copper coated?

Are the running lights supposed to get brighter when I press the brakes? I cannot see the brake lights if the running lights are on.

That sounds like a wiring issue. Could simply be a grounding issue. If the brakes and turn signals on your tow vehicle are separate bulbs then you will need a 3to2 trailer light converter installed on the tow vehicle to wire correctly. Then double check all wire colors and connections. You might be able to use your emergency flashers as a way to check your brake lights on the trailer but that assumes that the brake light system on the tow vehicle is working properly.
