With less light reaching the imaging sensor, a longer exposure or a wider aperture can be used. The wider aperture can be used to avoid the effects of diffraction or to achieve a shallow depth of field under even full sunlight. Neutral-density filters are often used to achieve motion-blur effects with slow shutter speeds Examples of ND filter use include: Blurring water motion (e.g. waterfalls, rivers, oceans). Reducing depth of field in very bright light (e.g. daylight). Using a wider aperture to stay below the diffraction limit. Reduce the visibility of moving objects. Add motion blur to subjects. Extended time exposures. To achieve your very own spectacular images try shooting scenes that include clouds, waterfalls, rivers or even moving vehicles.
