Perfect! My son is starting to spell and this was a great way to support that. I’m happy and looking forward to seeing the progress with his spelling.

This resource comes with a great booklet that will allow home schoolers to use the resource to its full potential. It came be used in a variety of ways, is sturdy, easy for young children to manipulate, which will also help with fine motor skills. Once children know their sounds, this resource can be used for building small words, CVC words, ie consonant, vowel, consonant words. It supports Kineasthetic learners, ie children who learn by doing things. Vital in all classrooms. AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE FOR ANY EARLY YEARS SETTING, HOME OR SCHOOL! I have added pics of the items, front and back of the box, of the instruction leaflet and of the items. I have also added a video and pics of this one, the first in the series of three, and off the other three as they all lead on from each other with an APPROPRIATE UPLIFT in learning. Age appropriate, bright children will start learning these from 3+, but some might still be using them at 5. VERY HAPPY TO RECOMMEND ALL OF THEM, INCLUDING THIS ONE.

This is more of a teaching resource than something for a child to ‘play’ with, or work through on their own. It is in some ways equivalent to a visual aid, but – more than that – it is a practical hands-on tool on which a child can see how words are formed, and themselves form words. Their own name is likely to come first, followed by some of the simple words that are illustrated on the light blue and pink cubes – dog, cat, ant, etc. After they get going, and for a keen learner to do some voluntary ‘revision’ practice, they can work on their own, but most tasks will need a teacher to at least introduce a concept. That means individual teaching or, at most, small group work. Good for home learning – not at all good if there are more than three children using a single box of reading rods at the same time. The enclosed leaflet should definitely be read right through by the prospective teacher. Besides explaining how the various colour codes are to be interpreted (e.g. pink pictures represent words beginning with a vowel; blue ones a consonant), it offers many good ideas for demonstrating how words work. Some ideas in the leaflet come as a surprise – or did to me. The concept of rhymes is introduced (cat, mat, bat, etc.), as is counting the number of syllables in a single word (up to three in the examples – volcano, violin, …). Through use of these rods, perhaps a new generation of poets will emerge (and rhymed verse with a strict metre will come back into fashion)! Well, perhaps not, but at least the children’s reading is likely to develop alongside almost without specifically paying attention to that. The cubes are nicely made and presented in a stout box that – with reasonable care – should well outlast any one child’s period of need for exercises at this level. ‘Yes’ to 3+ for building their own name from its elements – but mainly 5-6 plus for seriously beginning to read.

Another one for the toolkit which I think will be a great help for teaching phonics. In the well labelled box are vowel and consonant cubes and picture cubes, you also get a very informative booklet with all the different ways you can use the cubes. Essentially you pick a picture cube and encourage the child to spell the word using cubes. Thank goodness there’s a mix of capital letters and lower case, ideally I’d have liked all lower case because of how we teach phonics. I chose this set because I wanted to encourage spelling of CVC tricky words, so how I’d use this is to get the children to spell a word either by ear or by writing the word on a mini whiteboard and encouraging them to copy the spelling. I think this will be perfect not just in the classroom but at home to supplement the learning. I love how durable and well made the cubes are, and that box is so well labelled it makes me very happy, just don’t mess it up!

I think these are amazing and so good for learning! My great nephew is 3 years old and thus will help and encourage fun learning. The manual is also easy to follow for me and I never knew this way of learning when my son was younger. The blocks fit together with ease and are fun.

This is a fantastic set which makes learning a bit more fun. I really like the colour coded aspect with consonants represented in blue and vowels in red, this helps kids get used to the different types of letters. You can start with a simple game of getting kids to organise the letters into vowels and consonants and then build up to building words. You use the blocks to build words, and you can do this in a number of different ways. The blocks are well constructed, and the box is also sturdy enough that it will last a while with care. I think this is really useful for at home, or teachers can even use this in pre-school/school. A lot of thought has gone into the design of this, and I am impressed. The recommended age is 3+ and I think that is appropriate, but would definitely base it on child's abiltiy rather than seeing that as a rule as some kids might not be ready for this at 3, and it could still be a useful set at an older age.

These are a really good quality learning resource. It works just like the connecting number blocks but each one has a letter or sound on it so kids can combine to create words This is a great hands on way to get comfortable with reading and the basics of spelling, letter sounds and phonics This kit is the more basic one and we also have one with the digraphs and trigraphs in it This one has a lot of picture blocks too which can give you ideas of words to build or use it to identify beginning sound, end sound and so on You also get a booklet with ideas These will last years and would be ideal in a school or nursery or childminders as well as home

Ordered this set for my friend's son, as he is struggling with reading, and she says it helps a lot. A child can visually combine letters in a fun playful way and learn at the same time. I personally had a similar set from this range, which was for my daughter when she was 4 years old and was learning math, it helped us a lot and I believe these sets are definitely worth trying if you want to help your child with learning.

So many great uses in one box. Allows for play while learning. Each block has a capital and lower case version of letters. This allows for many practice activities using the same kit. Makes letter and sound acquisition flexible and fun for all learners! Great product!

I use these blocks as another way to practice spelling. These are great and work well and students like them.
