Major Upgrade from the First Generation โ Tough, Convenient, and Reliable
Iโve owned the first-generation igloohome smart padlock for years, and it has been rock solid. Mine has lived outdoors the entire time and still works like new, so I already had a lot of confidence in the brand when I bought the Smart Padlock 2 (SP2). Right away, the new design feels like a big improvement. The lock is noticeably bulkier and heavier, which gives it a much tougher, more substantial feel. Setup was straightforward, and programming access codesโwhether permanent or temporaryโis very easy through the app. The ability to share access without needing traditional keys or manually changing a combination is incredibly convenient. Compared to standard combination padlocks, this is on a completely different level for both flexibility and security. Itโs definitely a pricey lock, but in my experience itโs worth it. The convenience of smart access plus the durability makes it far more practical than typical combination locks. And since my first-generation lock has already proven it can survive years outdoors, Iโm optimistic this upgraded versionโwith its improved buildโwill last even longer. If you want a tough, well-built smart padlock thatโs easy to manage and share access with, this is an excellent option.

Initial impressions - vast improvements over first version padlock (update)
I had a couple of the first generation igloo padlocks and I really really wanted to love them. I hated the old style padlocks and how codes were set as I was always forgetting them, so when the gen 1 igloo padlock came out I was excited. The were a number of issues that made it beyond frustrating. Gen 1 Padlock issues: 1. The shackle was to short. I used it on an outdoor gate and it was a struggle to close it. If I was on the other side of the gate and wanted to enter in the code, I basically had to enter it upside down with the back to me. Not a pleasant experience for me, wife, or any service folks that needed to get in. Supposedly you could by a longer shackle but I never did because of the following problems. 2. Battery life - horrendous x 1000. I tried all sort of batteries include the energizer lithium and they didn't last a month (and that's being generous) - with no activity at the lock. I suspect the gen 1 had a firmware bug causing the bluetooth radio to stay on longer than it should. This was pretty much the nail in the coffin for this product. No way am I changing batteries on a padlock monthly. 3. Weather proof. The gen 1 padlock wasn't weather resistant - at all. A plastic covering was made available to protect it from water. Which kinda helped, but made seeing the buttons difficult as the cover was white and the buttons where faintly labeled. Cold temps I believe also drained the battery much quicker. 4. Range - For the app on your phone to work, you had to be on top of the lock, just a few feet away, my phone couldn't see the lock - even with line of site. 5. Recovery from battery drain. If the lock went dead, and it did very quickly, open the lock was a PITA. You had to use a 9V battery to jump start it. The connector for the 9V wasn't a good fit so it was difficult to make proper contact. You had to hold it just right to make contact. The battery polarity is NOT on the contacts and it doesn't have the standard 9V connector type for + and -. Very frustrating if you're sitting there in the dark, trying to up this thing. Several times I just gave up and had to come back during the day time. Even then it took 10-15 minutes to get it to unlock. Okay so those are all the issues with the gen 1. The Padlock 2 appears to be a different story! I just about gave up on Igloo and then I saw the ad for the new Padlock 2 and it looks like they addressed ALL the above issues in this version. It's sold out on their web-site and was happy to see them here on Amazon. I quickly scooped on one to test it out. Literally got it today (5/20/23) so not much time, but I can say it looks promising. First the Padlock 2 is built like a tank. The feel of it is incredible and looks like it could with stand a bullet. The first gen 1 in fairness was solid, but the padlock 2 takes it many steps further. The tech sheet says military grade and it definitely feels that way. The shackle is much longer. It's much easier to twist/turn the lock if on the other side of a gate to enter in the code. The bluetooth range seems MUCH better. I can stand 30 yds are so away and it makes a connection every time. I probably can go further but hadn't tested yet. This is very convenient as where my locks are I have line of site from my deck and I can just stand from my deck and connect to the lock - no need to go down on top of it. I bought a igloo wifi bridge (a failed attempt to improve range on the first gen) and will actually try it again to see if I can also control it over wifi. OMG It's a rechargeable battery! This is huge. No fiddling with disposable batteries *and* to charge it is a USB-C. Also if it's dead, you can plug in a portable usb-c power bank for power. Why wasn't this done in the first gen? I assume the rechargeable battery is sized to give the 9 months of battery life the tech sheet proclaims. Obviously I am on day one so we will see. I'm going to see if it can at least make a month (the other one couldn't) if it does that, I will remain optimistic. It has an IPX7 *waterproof* rating. This is about at high a weather proof rating you can go. No need for a sheath or other covering. Supposedly it can take extreme heat and cold temps. Again, I will be monitoring closely as we are going into the summer time in GA. So all in all, I am optimistic. Time will tell - the big factors are battery life and standing up to the elements. Right now, I will give the lock 5 stars, and will update this review over time as I have more soak time with it. 5/30/23 Impressions after one week of ownership is still very good. It's rained considerably in my area (Atlanta, GA, USA) and the lock has held up. Weather was a problem with the gen 1 version. After 1 week I checked the battery level and it lost 3% (at 97%). If I were to forecast that out, this would get me about 8.33 mo of battery life. Not bad but I was hoping for a year (although it's inline with the tech specs of 9 months). However a million times better than the better life of the gen 1 unit. I have another gen 2 lock that I'm charging up and going to stick in freezer for a week and test out the battery life and see what that's like. 7/6/2023 It's now early July 6 and my first lock (I've since bought another, which I will talk about in a moment) This lock has been the major torrential downpours, the massive heat and humid hear in the Atlanta area and it's been flawless. None of the gen 1 issues have manifested itself. As of now, the battery is 80%, so approximately 48.5 days since I brought this lock online. The battery burn rate is about .41%/day, which should yield about 244 days of actual use. Igloohome says about 9 months max on this and it's not to far off (244 days is approximately 35 weeks, about 1 week shy). I think I may get the full 9 months or greater. Here's why. My second Igloohome gen 2 lock, I bought and put online on 5/31/23. I specifically wanted to do a cold weather test so I dumped it in the freezer, which is obviously below freezing temperatures. I left it there for well over a week and it was still about 100%. So the battery drain *seems* to be slower in colder temperatures than warmer ones. While in the freezer I was able to sync, lock, unlock, and all that without an issue. See pic of the lock with frost on it, and all lights working and totally functional. So right now this locks remains a 5 star product and Igloohome nailed it on gen 2. It *almost* makes the massive frustration and waste of money on the gen 1 worth (I have 2 gen 1s and will put them on indoor stuff). One recommendation I'd like to see Igloohome put in is the ability to tweak the BLE radio power. Where my locks are I'd love to be able to stand on the edge corner of my deck and sync. Most of the time it works but often enough it doesn't and I have to get a little closer. If I could boost the power (knowing I am going to trade off battery life) that would be advantageous to me. Conversely if you want to reduce it because you know you will pretty much be on top of the lock when syncing or using it, you can eek out more battery life. I have a bridge and will be testing that out next to see if I can get the remote status and lock/unlock features working. 12/12/2005 Two years in and zero issues. I am now up to 4 SP2 locks and love love love them. Battery life is beyond the initial specs. I am getting a year or maybe a little more in the mid-southeast US climate (full four seasons with many days above 95 degrees/below freezing) before it starts with the low battery beep tones. The locks take a pounding, rain, wind, direct sun, and look just as good as they did out of the box. I still haven't gotten around to re-trying my bridge as what I thought was my use-case (remote unlock anywhere) wasn't really necessary (you can use the app to generate a code for that). I have no idea how this can be improved other than a shackle extender.

Terrible Customer Service 6/21/24
Posted June 21st, 2024. I purchased the original version of this padlock, the IGP1 version three times. One in 2019, another in 2020, and the final one in 2021, all of which failed after one year of exclusively indoor use. I then bought the new version, the SP2, that had lasted a bit longer at a year and a couple months. What failed? The motor that drives the unlock of the padlock gets jammed? stuck? I don't know what exactly but after about a year the padlock will randomly start refusing to unlock. You type the PIN in and the light turns green and will emit a tone of success only for it to still be locked. It was not happening consistently one after another attempt but it would occur about every 5 unlock attempts. I used the recommend solution of applying lock grease. I did this at the 6 month and year mark and unfortunately that did not fix anything. I contacted the provided the customer service email form that is supplied by Amazon only to get the absolute worst customer service ever. Dave Lavilla said I had to send them a video of the lock failing and I told him that it happens sporadically. I can't spend the time and effort to always think "will this be the time it fails and I have to record it?". I am very unhappy that after almost what, $400? $500? in money spent on Igloo products I would hope to get better help. I even offered to mail it back in hopes they would send a replacement when they tested it themselves and that was given a firm no. PROS: Great rechargeable battery. Solid construction. Looks good for a padlock. CONS: Lock fails after a year. Customer service does not want to replace it at all costs.

Above and beyond service
I've been using the igloohome Padlock 2 for a couple of years and it performed flawlessly the entire time. It held up well in all weather conditions and the smart lock features worked reliably every single day. Unfortunately, the unit eventually stopped charging and became unresponsive. Here's where igloohome really impressed me. Even though the lock was well past the warranty period, their support team (shoutout to Quin) stepped up and provided a free courtesy replacement at no cost. They absolutely did not have to do that, but they chose to stand behind their product anyway. That kind of customer service is rare these days. It's one thing to make a good product, and the Padlock 2 is a great product. But it's another thing entirely to take care of your customers when they need help, even when you're under no obligation to do so. igloohome went above and beyond, and they've earned a loyal customer for life. Highly recommend both the product and the company.

Customer service is fantastic, Lock works great
Fantastic padlock with convenient features and wireless functionality. I have a lock on an exterior gate that I have open to drive to my house. Easy to open when itโs raining and dark as it opens up via my phone. Do not have Wi-Fi or power options near the gate lock, Blue Tooth works well. I have different codes set up for certain people that need to come to the house. There are also caregivers for my elderly father that need to come go easy for them to use. Had the Lock for about 9 months. The latch mechanism inside had broken and would not lock. Customer service reviewed the lock and sent a new replacement. Responsive and transaction was straightforward. New lock works great!!

Great product
Really like this product. Its easy to use, great battery life, fast recarge, and functions as advertised. The access options ( code, bluetooth, various durations, unlock with fingerprint) are very useful. I think someone tried to break the lock. It still lock, but the shackle separates from the lock when its unlocked. Customer service graciously replaced the lock and were fast, friendly and efficient. I will be purchasing 2 more in the near future.

Great battery, great lock, terrible app
Great battery life great lock. Stands up to 4-season outdoor weather. Itโs annoying that you canโt unlock it from the app without re-logging in to the app every single time and to do that the app needs internet. But now u just use a passcode on the lock itself.

Solid lock but so-so implementation
Update 8/15/24 - this is how the yard guys left the lock. The only clue that it was left open was that there was no โAuto locked after closingโ message in the app. You can send remote lock/unlock messages which appear to work, but the stupid lock has no idea that it is hanging open. This should be core functionality. This review reflects use of the lock and the bridge. I received a lock that was an obvious return (package was damaged & the film coating that should have been on the lock face was just stuck on the outside of the package). The lock is solidly made and setup was quick and easy. My use case is to know who is coming & going from the back yard, to be able to access this information remotely, to know whether the lock was left open (a specialty of our yard crew), and to have the rechargeable battery last the summer while I am away. Who comes & goes grade: A Does well at this, with options for permanent codes, codes for limited durations only, and code schedules. Also allows for creation of Bluetooth access. The lockโs activities are logged and are available for review in the app. It also sends a push notification of the lock being opened and by whom (assuming youโve set up unique codes for each accessor). Remote access grade: B Remote access requires installation of the bridge. It connects to WiFi for network access and by Bluetooth to the lock. The Bluetooth range is very poor. My lock is less than 6 feet from the bridge and the signal reports as poor. WiFi reports as medium. It does work, but slowly. If your lock is far away and on the margin of good WiFi coverage, this will not work. Lock left open grade: F The lock is oblivious to its current state. The app image shows a โlock lockedโ symbol at all times and signifies nothing. The only way to tell if it was re-locked is to check the log. You do not get a push notification when the lock is re-locked. Battery life grade: TBD. I have had it for 2 weeks and itโs down to 84%. That suggests that battery life is only 13 weeks. Itโs possible that the setup and initial testing process used more battery than normal operation so this one is TBD. This gadget is expensive and for the price I expect more for connectivity and app functionality. With luck it will be durable. Unfortunately, at this time there are not competitors with an appealing product so we shall see.

Excellent durable lock but a high price
I ordered this lock for an outside ski locker. The locker gets a fair amount of roof drip and ice buildup. I have been through 2 cheaper combination locks which have either frozen up or eventually (over a few months) rusted and became inoperable. This is a robust, well sealed lock that has easily shrugged off the weather, melting ice, deep freeze and challenging weather conditions. It is quite a chunky lock but I think that supports its quality. It does require an app for setup, painful but worth it for a strong device. I initially set the lock up in a bit of a rush and didnโt write down passwords and codes as I usually do. When I returned in a few months, my aging memory got the best of me. However, the support I received from the manufacturer was excellent and the lock was up and running again in a reasonable amount of time! This is an excellent lock, operates well, battery life has been good so far even in below freezing temps. It is pricey, so you could probably go through a number of cheaper locks for the cost of this one. I am very pleased with the quality however and this lock has survived where others failed dismally.
