Hard to tell the difference between this and the high detail version when running
A4 is brilliant because it’s simple design and hard to tell the difference between this and the detailed version when running on track. Runs well and smooth, great addition to the railway

detail and finish is superb
The detail is superb. Price reasonable and order processed quickly and efficiently. A beautiful addition to my steam locomotive collection.

Annoying Click
Beautifully made replica of the Mallard steam engine. Unfortunately one of the coupling rods was striking the engine casing thus creating a most annoying click......hence the four stars. At the price paid, I would expect Hornby quality control to have picked this up. Shame as Hornby products are overall on the expensive side.

Excellent value.
I bought this knowing it was a railroad budget model, therefore I did not expect it to be as well detailed or accessorised as a more expensive model. It runs really well and is quiet with little or no motor noise. Anyone buying this expecting a display quality model needs to shake their head. Maybe they would expect to pay a mini price for a porche, so to judge it by that criteria is wrong. Very pleased and it doesn't look bad at all on the track where the detail isn't that noticeable anyway.

Quality not controlled!
The quality of these models has seriously dropped. I bought this Mallard for a Christmas present and it was broken inside the box! Maybe says me right for not opening it and checking it but I shouldn’t have to do for the kind of money that we are talking here! The most minute mechanism has broken and rendered the locomotive useless. I have initiated a replacement but on Christmas morning that doesn’t leave me in a very good place with regard to my son! Who is now very upset. Hornby need to address the quality control because it has become terrible. This Isn’t the first time this has happened!

Design issue??
I wish I had not missed the "return date" by a day! It's a very nice looking model but even on a relatively new track both the front bogie and the engine's tender tend to come off the track, too often for my liking, very irritating. And how being a new model it more frequently comes off when entering new points. The front bogie is loosely sprung concept and the tender is rather close to engine.
