Any reason why I couldn't use this cable to connect my samsung external hard drive to my laptop?

I’m sorry I can’t answer that. I’m using it to charge my phone. I used a Heyday connector with it and it works great.

What gauge or thickness is the wire?

That I don't know but is the same as the Apple one that came with the new phone. Was recommended by Macworld article. We use them in our vehicles and work just fine.
