Heartbreaking and immediate
This was the first book that I read about the Holocaust that gave such an immediate perspective - the writers of the letters included were actually living their experience as they wrote the letters. This was not a memorial of their experience - it was happening as they were writing the letters. It was heartbreaking to realize that, several days following the last letter, they were exterminated.
