The focal point can get pretty small and intense. I lit a tinder bundle first made of some dry grass and a cotton ball with Vaseline. It was a bright and sunny day so it only took a minute or so to get the bundle lit. **Q: How are these packaged?** A: Each Opticlens lens comes in it's own reusable plastic sleeve for protection from dirt and scratches. The 12 lenses are then package in a resealable ziplock style plastic pouch for storage and protection. **Q: What is the actual overall size, and what is the size of the lens portion? What is the focal point dimension? What material are they made out of?** A: 2 3/16" x 3 3/8" is the actual overall size, 1 11/16" x 3 1/8" is the lens portion. I don't know what you mean by focal point dimension, I believe they are made out of some sort of plastic. **Q: do you have to hold the magnifier above the object you are reading?** A: Yes, you do need to hold it above the object at least a few inches. If you lay it flat on the page, the image will be clear but will not magnify. The magnification will increase as you raise it further form the page until it reaches it's maximum magnification of 3X normal size (300%). This is about 6 to 10 inches form the object. Just make sure you have some of these available. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Helpful for a very specific use *by M***N on October 26, 2022* This is a bit roundabout, but perhaps the specificity will be of use to you: I've played on rec league softball teams for 35 years or so, and my vision is one of many aspects of my game that has deteriorated! About five years ago I started wearing glasses for the first time -- progressive lenses, basically trifocals with a smooth transition between the different magnifications. They're great most of the time, but just try running to catch a fly ball with your head bobbing and the ball moving from one lens to another! So I wear a single lens set of glasses for sports, and that works well for me, except I can't read the scorebook well enough to keep score. (Finally, we're getting to the point!) These help a lot. I keep one in the pocket of my sliding pants, and it's perfectly happy there. When I need to keep score, I can now see what I'm doing. It takes a bit of patience to figure out just how far away to hold it, and it helps a lot if I close one eye, since the vision in one eye (like yours, probably) is a little better than the other.
