Can it be carried horizonally?

Well yeah, just mount it horizontally on your belt.

I must be missing somwthing. it says and shows two ways to mount the sheath. but the pics don't show a belt going through slots. how do you use it?

Mine is a different knife OD green single edge so the sheath may be different also and mine is belt loop only. My Brother was was a Door gunner 1970 173rd ABN Casper PLT.

Difference between catcher and sow catcher?

The W Catcher has a single edged blade and has more of "knife" configuration. The Sow Catcher has a double edged, slightly ovoid blade that is configured more like a dagger or short sword.
