How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?

A Brand New Christmas Classic
Two hundred years ago, in 1823, the American poet Clement Clarke Moore published the verse “A Visit from St. Nicholas” which is now more popularly known by its opening line, “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” During these past two centuries children from all over the world have asked the perennial question about the Christmas Eve appearance of Santa Claus: How will Santa visit their homes especially if they live in a home that does not have a chimney? In a new secular Christmas book, Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen encourage questions about the many, many ways Santa Claus may make his annual Christmas Eve visit to every good girl and boy. No children are left out even if their home is a tropical residence made of grass, a pueblo made of mud bricks, or an urban high rise made entirely of steel and glass. This instant classic children's book is a verbally and visually hilarious exploration of the infinite ways Santa visits children around the world on Christmas Eve. They address some very practical questions that children have asked for generations. Does Santa’s red suit become covered with dirty soot after chimney visits? Why don’t watch dogs they bark when he appears in the middle of the night? What is best present to leave for Santa: healthy carrot sticks or delicious cookies? This delightful investigation of Santa’s Christmas Eve behaviors is destined to become a family treasure that children will want to read again and again. The very, very best part of this instant Christmas classic is that no secrets are ever pondered yet alone given away. Santa's secret remains just that.

Holiday fun!
Barnett tackles this mystery with ingenuity and humor as he proposes a series of scenarios. Head first? Feet first? Can Santa body morph—shrinking or stretching like taffy? And what if there is no chimney? Would a faucet do the trick? Or perhaps he can slide under the door or slip through the mail slot.Once he’s inside—what about navigating in the dark and dealing with the family dog? There’s a wealth of creativity and fun here as we follow Santa through his holiday routine of leaving presents and enjoying snacks. The narrative voice perfectly brings to mind the endless imaginings that children are capable of and sets the stage for some wonderfully inspired conversations with young readers. In the end, Barnett concedes he really doesn’t know how Santa manages his extraordinary challenge. But that’s okay. What matters is that Santa finds a way.Klassen’s illustrations are a perfect pairing with the text adding an extra level of understated absurdity to enrich every page.Highly recommended for home and school libraries.

Maybe Santa can turn into fire!
I wasn't sure how this book would go over with my kids, ages six, four, and two. Turns out they love it. The speculations about how Mr. Claus gets it done get their imaginations going. They giggle especially hard at the fire idea and the laundry idea. If you've got imaginative kiddos, they will probably enjoy the book, too!
