Turn them on when the grandkids are coming over, disengage them when the kiddos leave! It takes me about 30 seconds to disengage the locks when the kids walk out the door. Yes, I timed it!When our first grandchild was born, I put spring-loaded safety locks on the cabinets under the sink. She was that amazing child who could be told one time, “don’t play with that, honey,” and she’d leave it alone, but I couldn’t assume she’d never try. Better safe than sorry. Then the second one came along. He is into everything, and I mean everything! When he first started pulling himself up, he managed to grab one of those spring-loaded safety locks on the kitchen cabinets at just the right place and got a door open without even knowing it could happen.That’s when I found these magnetic locks. I’m fine with kids pulling out containers to play with, and maybe some pots and pans. But I didn’t want all the glass baking dishes landing on the floor, and I didn’t really want to put back every item from every cabinet, breakable or not. These locks keep the littlest one out. He pulls and pulls, but he can’t get the cabinets open, and he gives up to go find other mischief instead. Big sister, who was 3 when we put these locks on, quickly learned how to use the “magic magnet” to open the cabinets so she could be my helper. It makes her feel big and important that she’s allowed to get the opener magnet and use it. She places it as high as she can on the refrigerator when she’s done so the baby can’t reach it.A couple of pointers for installing and using:My cabinets have a little pad on the corner of each door for quieter closing. I discovered with the first set I put on that I needed to allow about 1/8 inch shift of the catch or the door piece wouldn’t reach far enough to hook onto it. By that I mean, when I placed the flat part that goes on the frame of the cabinet, I needed to let it stick out just a little from the frame to account for the thickness of that little pad on the corner of the door. When it was flush with the edge of the cabinet, the hook couldn’t quite reach it. I recommend doing your first install on a double-door cabinet so you can reach through from the adjoining door for proper placement. If you need to adjust, you can disengage the catch via the other door. Once you’ve done a couple, it will be a cinch to place them just right. Peal off just a bit of the paper covering the sticky part to make sure it’s placed properly. Test it, then when you’re sure where you want it, peal off all the paper and press firmly for 30 seconds. They’re removable if you ever decide you don’t need the locks anymore, but in the meantime, it makes opening the cabinets fast and easy. There are lots of colors available. The tan blends enough with my wood doors that they aren’t even noticeable.I put these locks in my bathroom, too, including the drawers. I found that the opener magnet wasn’t strong enough to release the lock through the thicker wood of the drawer. I happened to have some strong crafting magnets leftover from a project. I added one to the opener magnet and that did the trick. I was no longer locked out of the drawers, but the kids were!Where to keep that opener magnet so it’s handy: in the kitchen, I keep it on the fridge. I have a post it at the top of the fridge that says, “magnetic safety locks are OFF.” When the kids aren’t in the house, the opener magnet goes on that post it. My husband can tell at a glance that the locks are off. It’s a small thing, but it saves steps and makes kitchen work a little easier. When the locks are needed, the opener magnet goes lower down on the fridge so the older grandchild can reach it, but not the baby. In the bathroom, I didn’t want to put the sticky tape holder on the mirror. It’s the obvious place to put the opener magnet, using the holder that comes with it for that purpose, but I just didn’t want it there. I put a tiny post it at the top of the light switch plate that says “on” and one at the bottom that says “off.” We have a double switch, one for the light and one for the fan, so using the fan side, the opener magnet isn’t in the way for normal light switch use. Thank you! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ For the most part, very pleased, especially that they work upside down *by S***C on Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2018* We have installed these on several cabinets in our kitchen and bathroom. As I've only had them installed for a few days I cannot rate their durability, but I found them quite easy to install and use. I had bought these partly because they provide a mountable base for the "key" (thus making the location of the "key" predictable/reliable.I did deduct one star because I found several times that the locking mechanism needed a "nudge" to engage (for example close the cabinet door "firmly" so that the vibration/jolt of the closure would engage the lock). As a result of this I realized that I would have to intentionally verify the lock had indeed engaged as expected.I would have actually given a "half-a-star" back when, much to my surprise and joy, I discovered that the locks work in either vertical orientation (so the locking plate goes on the bottom or on the top with respect to the door locking mechanism). This meant that the tall door on our linen cabinet where we store medications wouldn't require me to put it at the top and make it potentially difficult/impossible for my wife (who stands 4-5" shorter than I and who has shorter arms as well) to reach to disengage the lock.The installation took me a few times before I realized that I had to offset the locking plate some to compensate for the stopper/cushion on the cabinet doors. Once I figured that out, every subsequent installation I completed without any difficulty.SO much nicer than having the ugly exterior locks over the cabinet handles. I also like the fact that these engage with almost no room between the cabinet door and the frame.
