The Bag I'm In: Underground Music and Fashion in Britain 1960-1990 : Knee, Sam: desertcart.co.uk: Books

Review: especially for someone like me who has not grown up in Britain and ... - Amazing! Ostensibly this is a book about, as the subtitle says, "underground music and fashion in Britain 1960-1990", which seems a very limited scope, especially for someone like me who has not grown up in Britain and who knows nothing about, nor is particularly interested in this topic. Indeed the stated topic forms the basis for the text - fashion, to which the "bag" in the main title apparently refers.,more than music. However, the text constitutes just about 13% of the contents (excluding introductions and appendices). It consists of one page for each of the 36 chapters relating to specific periods or fashions. The bulk of the volume is taken by close to 1000 amazing photographs, which tell, a lot more than the text, a story of a whole subculture, of which fashion and music are just a superficial expression. Although the specific subculture is part of the British culture at the specified period, the rebellious emotional and socio-political messages expressed by photos of this young generation are universal. For me this has been a revelation.

British youth culture in all its guises but brilliantly illustrated by authentic period photos that give the book a unique inside (that is generally missing from most books that attempt to analyse 'yoof culture') What's more Sam has missed his calling in life as he is a great and knowledgeable writer that gives the book credibility....

As someone not British but always interested in youth scenes, underground, music and sub-/culture this book is quite a treasure for me. It is mainly a photo book but the pictures are not the ones you've seen so many times in other (good) books about punk, beat, goth, northern soul, glam, new romantic, mod, rockabilly etc. A lot of photos are from unknown or not that famous young people belonging to a certain scene at a certain time. To give it a structure, the book has 36 chapters about different youth scenes from the years 1960 untill 1990. Each one is introduced with a short text about the time, music, fashion and also politics. At the end you will find superb illustrations about the "style" of each scene which also show that this is not a book only about fashion (or if so, with a twinkle in the eye). Certain styles have been re-discovered, re-used or been mixed up over the years. A bit of non-plus is, that certain British youth scenes (immigrants, black people, Reggae/Dub, Hip Hop etc.) are hardly shown. But given the fact, that this book doesn't come along with the tagline "ultimate" or "underground-fashion-bible" and also, that the people who worked on it come from a certain background - this can be excused. At the end, a fascinating book and not one (given its format) lying around unused on your photo-book coffeetable. Also recommended for people born later than 1990 interested in history and past. The story does not end there.
