AN HBO ORIGINAL SERIES, COMING JANUARY 2026 Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones , A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES AND BUZZFEED These collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 illustrations that artist Gary Gianni created specifically for this book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn't dead—yet. “Stirring . . . As Tolkien has his Silmarillion , so [George R. R.] Martin has this trilogy of foundational tales. They succeed on their own, but in addition, they succeed in making fans want more.”— Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Review: A fun read with great illustrations - A fun read and good book quality. A Great Read
"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" by George R.R. Martin is a compelling collection of three novellas set in the richly detailed world of Westeros. Taking place about a century before the events of "A Song of Ice and Fire," these stories follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, who is revealed to be Aegon V Targaryen. The book masterfully blends elements of classic chivalric romance with the dark, intricate politics and rich lore that fans of Martin's work have come to expect. Duncan, a towering but humble knight, and Egg, a prince in disguise, make for an engaging pair, their dynamic providing both humor and depth. Martin’s skillful world-building is on full display, with vibrant descriptions and well-developed characters that enrich the tapestry of Westeros’ history. Each novella offers a self-contained narrative, yet they interlink to reveal broader themes of honor, loyalty, and the complexities of knighthood. The prose is as immersive and detailed as ever, ensuring that readers are drawn into the medieval setting and its nuanced social structures. Overall, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is a satisfying and well-crafted addition to Martin’s expansive universe. It provides a deeper understanding of the history and lore of Westeros, while offering an engaging and adventurous read that stands on its own merits.

Incredible prequel to A Game of Thrones
A century before A Game of Thrones, two heroes wandered Westeros. When a book cover says that with the legendary name GRRM on top, one just can’t ignore this little gem of a book. On top of that, its TV adaptation will be out in the next 10 days or so. I resisted reading this book for years as I was eagerly waiting for the TV outing, so I could read it right before its launch. My timing is perfect. This is from the age when Targaryens are still on the Iron Throne, but unfortunately, the Dragons have gone; only the memory remains. There comes a new hero in the form of a Hedge Knight with no background, knighted by a dying Knight who took him as a kid and trained him to be a good one at that. Tagging along with him is a nut case of a boy called Egg, originally he happens to be none other than Aegon Targaryen, the future king of the seven kingdoms. Let me tell you that the kid is hilarious, and the way he takes our giant of a Knight Ser Duncan was totally laugh-out-loud comedy, and the way Ser Duncan keeps trying to punish him was so funny. Even his love interest was a good turn of events, and even on that front, the author kept me asking for more. Their amazing chemistry is the best part of this entire story told in three parts and much to my heartbreak it is hardly 350 pages which so less from GRRM standards, I kept asking for more to no avail though, and guess what, he had no time to continue its second part as his fans are still waiting for the last two parts of his masterpiece “A Song of Ice and Fire” yet. I was eagerly looking forward to glimpses of my favourite kingdoms like Starks, Lannister’s, Frey’s and so many more in no particular order and Mr GRRM does obliges on that front, if he ever end up writing this one’s sequel, I guess the great wall is not that far before Ser Duncan will travel that far with his insolent squire to take a look at the wall or may be go beyond that too. But the best part about this book is the Illustrations by Gary Gianni, they were simply WOW, the way he gave the faces to so many characters, it was totally outstanding. I believe he has made the TV adapter's job easy by making those illustrations, as it won’t be much for the casting crew to pick up the right actors for those characters, going by his sketches. There are no fewer than 125+ sketches in a 350-page book. Have you read A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, or are you looking forward to the TV adaptation at least? It is very hard to choose one favourite from Mr Martin, so it is inevitable that almost all his books so far are best sellers. Big time looking forward to so much more from him at the earliest.

A rather hopefully time in westoros....
This book is set before 100 years from GOT, couple of years after blackfyre rebellion. The book follows 3 short stories about dunk ( sir Duncan the tall ) and his squire egg ( psst! Aegon Targaryen) . This is before Duncan the tall becomes a kingsguard, he's merely a knight here and we see his adventures as inexperienced warrior travelling through westoros. Perhaps this is the only series or book in ASOIF where there isn't major war or chaos going on, it's mostly a peacetime westeros

A tight, focused story set in Westeros
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R. R. Martin is proof that you don’t need sprawling wars or dozens of POV characters to tell a compelling story in Westeros. These novellas strip the world down to something more intimate. Instead of kings and world-altering events, you get Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, moving through a quieter version of the Seven Kingdoms. And somehow, that smaller scale makes the world feel even more real. The stakes aren’t about who sits on the Iron Throne. They’re about honor, identity, and what it actually means to be a knight when the system itself is flawed. Dunk is one of Martin’s most effective characters because he isn’t clever or politically savvy. He’s just trying to do the right thing, even when he doesn’t fully understand the consequences. That tension carries the entire book. You watch him navigate a world where ideals and reality rarely line up, and it gives the story a kind of grounded honesty that the main series sometimes deliberately obscures. What stands out most is how much weight Martin gives to small decisions. A conversation, a misunderstanding, a moment of pride. These things ripple outward in ways that feel both inevitable and tragic. It’s a reminder that history isn’t just shaped by kings, but by ordinary people making imperfect choices. This isn’t as grand or complex as A Song of Ice and Fire, but that’s exactly why it works. It’s cleaner, more focused, and in some ways more emotionally resonant. Martin trades scale for clarity here, and the result is one of the most consistently engaging entries in the world he’s built. It’s not just a great companion to the larger series. It stands on its own as a story about duty, class, and the quiet cost of trying to be good in a world that doesn’t always reward it.
