It has a slideable end so you can either have it like a spotlight or, if you want the beam to go further, you can narrow it down and it's really far reaching, which is good for checking what/who is in front of you right up the road/field. I use mine most days because I walk my dog at 6:30am and there's hardly any street lights on and it has stayed charged up for ages. What I also like about it is that it's light, but with enough weight to clout someone unsavoury should they come too close. There's 4 settings - bright, slightly dimmer, bright strobe and slightly dimmer strobe. Again, the strobe can be used to disorientate any would be attackers! I was so impressed with it that I bought one for my son for when he goes to his allotment, and also bought one for my son-in-law for Christmas.
