How large is the actual opening you sit on? Mine is 9 inches and not big enough.

It depends on the width of your commode ( Maximum 14"). The sitz bath is flexible and adjusts to the size and shape of the commode.

How many do you have to use before its completely gone.

It depends on the severity of the blockage on the bartholin's duct. Usually, you should use the kit 4 times a day for 4-5 days with luke warm water. That helps to soften the clog and most people get the cyst drained out on day 3 or 4. After it's drained out, you can use once every 2-3 days to prevent any clog formation in the future.

Can it be placed in a bathtub as opposed to the toilet?

Well it comes with a little plastic toilet holder. I’m sure you could but you’d need a ton more product. There are several already portioned bags.
