Great alternative to deet
Did some research and this was suggested over spays containing deet. Used by myself and partner during two weeks in Costa Rica. Seemed to be very effective. We only had a couple of bites each while others using things like Jungle Formula had many more. It doesn't damage clothes or equipment, not sticky and no bad smell. One application lasts hours. Definitely recommend

It actually does work!
I actually think this stuff works! I’m a keen gardener based in the south of England and this summer have been eaten alive by mosquitoes and midges, even after spraying 50% deet. I read that this can work even when deet doesn’t and so decided to give it a go. It is a lovely moisturising cream that does not feel like it has any chemicals or nasties in it. Kind of like putting suncream on! I have now used it for the last couple of weeks especially at that 6-7pm danger time in the garden. Touch wood, but currently I have to say that I have no bites. This is in contrast to losing sleep every night through the itch/scratch/itch cycle previously from all the horrendous bites I had. I really do hope this product continues to work in the way it has so far, fingers crossed! I do recommend it.

Repelled insects but spray doesn't work
For me it appeared to repel insects but not for my partner. The most frustrating thing was that after the first spray the spray mechanism did not work, so we ended up having to pour it out into our hands and spread it over our body. That part was terrible. I would not buy it again. Having read through other reviews now, there is clearly a packaging issue going back 8 years, but nothing has been done about the fundamental problem of leakage and the pump/spray not working - the manufacturers have simply plastic-wrapped it to save from leakage on transit for delivery. Really?

Great alternative to DEET
I have a history of getting really severe allergic reactions from bites of all kinds. So an upcoming trip to Tanzania followed by a trip to Miami meant that I needed to find something that would minimise the risk of me getting bitten. I have tried other products that contain DEET, But always felt that this is a very harsh ingredient and something that I wasn’t super comfortable rubbing on my skin for extended periods of time. My mother-in-law suggested this is an alternative as she has issues getting bitten and having really severe reactions. So I bought a few bottles and hoped for the best. Well, I will say is that I didn’t have any bites while I was away and I use this daily in place of my usual moisturiser. I also used suncream on top, And did not use any perfume. Most days in addition to this, I used antibacterial wipes on my skin. I’ve continued to use this since coming back home (I live in the UK) Mainly on days where I know I will be outside or where my skin might be exposed to bugs. Fortunately, I have not had any bites this summer. This will continue to be a staple in my medicine cabinet and in my handbag to be on the safe side. Would recommend! They also arrived quickly, which help when I was packing very last minute before my trip. Thank you.

Very effective in warding off insects, including sand flies, more effectively than DEET

I gave it low stars for traveling because the 1/2 gallon bottle is huge and not really suitable for traveling with, that being said for a day outside this stuff works amazing! I used this and the Sawyer permethrin clothes treatment together(this for my skin, the other just on my clothes) I went outside and the ticks were getting all lethargic from the clothes treatment and the mosquitos didn't want to touch my skin, they kept landing for a split second and taking right back off without biting, no swatting necessary! I went outside on one occasion where I literally had swarms of mosquitos from the moment I opened the car door, I spent more than 3 hours outdoors, only had one bite, I am normally swarmed by mosquitos, some people are naturally repellent to mosquitos, I am not one of those people, quite the opposite actually, I attract them more than anyone around me normally and with this stuff on I was able to keep them away! This stuff works like magic! Oh and did I mention no aweful smells? It's actually practically scent free, and with only a very slightly oily feeling that kinda resembles suntan lotion feeling, but more tolerable. You will not regret trying this stuff, I wish I knew about this stuff ages ago, Sawyer is my new favorite bug repellent!

Ok. Heres the skinny. Dont believe me, research it yourself. 1. Just as effective as deet for ticks and mosquitos according to 3rd party tests. (i trust that more than peoples opinion... think placebo affect of people smelling deet and assuming it works better because it smells like a chemical bomb) 2. MORE effective than deet for biting flies/chiggars/ knats. (third party studies verify this) 3. Virtually scentless! No, seriously, its not marketing bafoonery. 4. Not oily! when it dries, you legit cant feel anything. You dont even know you have anything on. Deet and even the sawyer picaridan spray is a little oily. For what every reason the lotion is less oily than the spray which makes no sense. 5. Lasts longer! for what ever reason the lotion last longer and isnt oily... not sure how that works... 6. Picaridan is non toxic to dogs, deet is highly toxic to dogs. 7. Picaridan doesnt damage synthetic clothing. Deet does. Downsides? The only one i can think of outside of (its a little more expensive) is that it supposedly is not as sweat resistant as oil based deet solutions. Literally, that is the only checkbox in deets favor...

Really works, and doesn’t leave that sticky feeling. Although has a slight smell. The lotion version is even better

My husband and I traveled to Miami for a wedding recently. We are planning to have kids soon, and even though the Zika problem seems to be under control, we didn't want to take any chances. I purchased this stuff on the recommendation of Consumer Reports, and it is definitely the best stuff I've ever found. I made it through a five-day trip without a single bite! My husband ended up with two bites, but I'm going to chalk that up to user error (I think he missed his ankles and wrists during application). I preferred the lotion packets to the 4oz spray, mostly because I just felt like I was getting more complete coverage. Bonus points for the fact that it is completely unscented.
