## Description

Review: Must read for history lovers - Lords of the Deccan is one of the most impressive works of narrative history I have read in recent times. Anirudh Kanisetti takes what is often a neglected period of Indian history — the rise and rule of the Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas — and brings it alive with a storyteller’s eye for detail. What makes this book stand out is the balance between rigorous research and accessible writing. Kanisetti draws upon inscriptions, literature, and archaeology, yet he never overwhelms the reader with jargon. Instead, he builds a vivid picture of Deccan society, politics, and culture, where temples were not just spiritual centers but also hubs of power and wealth. The chapters move almost like a series of interconnected stories, filled with rulers, poets, and warriors who shaped medieval South India. At times, the narrative reminded me of an epic — but one that is deeply rooted in evidence. The author does not shy away from complexities, including issues of power struggles, caste, and religion, making the book honest rather than romanticized. For readers interested in Indian history, this book is essential. It fills a huge gap in our understanding of the subcontinent between the fall of the Guptas and the rise of the Delhi Sultanate. For me, the strength of this work lies in how it makes a distant past feel immediate and relevant, and in doing so, it sets a benchmark for how popular history can be written.
Review: Fantastic - a must read. - This book is a must read. So often our knowledge of history of India is based on Maurya followed by Mughals and British - with big holes in what happened in between. A fantastic narrative of Chalukyas and the history of what defines Karnataka and South today. Very well researched and lots of information which otherwise we would never know. Can't recommend it enough.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Sweep of South Indian history | Excellent Read
*by A***O on 15 August 2022*

The book provides a brilliant sweep of the history of the Deccan for close to 700 years. It takes us through the maze that is South Indian history, from the Chalukya kings to the Rashtrakutas and the Cholas and back to the Chalukyas again. The history of South India is often viewed through the lens of the Vijayanagara empire and, to a lesser extent, the Cholas. The book gives us a realistic perspective of the Chalukyas and the Rashtrakutas. We owe two significant things to the Chalukyas that have significantly impacted us. 1. Stopping the North Indian monarch Harshavardhana from invading S India. 2. The defeat of the Arabs and driving them out of India. Pulakeshin II defeated Harsha on the banks of Narmada in the winter of 618-619 CE. Pulakeshin entered into a treaty with Harsha, with the Narmada River designated as the border between the Chalukya Empire and Harshavardhana. An inscription dated 736 CE, talks about a crushing defeat on a Tājika (Arab) army. The Arabs were defeated at Navsari in southern Gujarat. The Arab intention might have been to make inroads into South India. However, to the South of the Mahi River lay the powerful Chalukyan empire. The Chalukyan ( Lata ) viceroy at Navsari, Avanijanashraya Pulakeshin, comprehensively defeated the invading Arab forces as documented in a Navsari grant of 739 CE. According to the inscription, the Tājika(Arab) army defeated was one that had attacked "Kacchella, Saindhava, Saurashtra, Cavotaka, Maurya and Gurjara" kings. Pulakeshin subsequently received the titles "Solid Pillar of Deccan" (Dakshināpatha-sādhāra) and the "Repeller of the Unrepellable" (Anivartaka-nivartayitr). The great Rashtrakuta prince Dantidurga, who was subsidiary to Chalukyas then, also played an essential role in the battle. Dantidurga laid the foundation for another great empire that dominated South India for the next three hundred years, the Rashtrakutas. The book is essential for all lovers of history, particularly those who want an understanding of South Indian history.
