Spider Bones: (Temperance Brennan 13)

Love the science of the explanation!
This is very interesting as it covers the science of DNA and human inherited factors. Worth reading with an open mind.

Over the top
Not up to her earlier works. Disappointed.

Good story
As always, a good complex story, but I found the scientific explanations took over a bit.

Classic Brennan fare
I always enjoy a good Kathy Reichs novel - lots of procedural and scientific fact, plenty of detail that I half regret reading momentarily, a good dose of uncertainty about Brennan's private life, and all delivered with a healthy dollop of dry humour. This novel doesn't disappoint at all. I've seen other reviews which complain about some of these aspects, but it's not like Reichs has suddenly started writing a different kind of book. To those who don't like scientific and forensic detail in their crime novels, I would point out that there are many crime writers out there to choose from and perhaps reading books by those who are forensic professionals might not be the best idea. The plot centres around the appearance of a body which suggests that another body was misidentified forty years ago. Naturally, this requires investigation and, also naturally, this is not the end of the matter. On top of this, Brennan is pulled into another case while working on this one, leading to plenty of complexity, red herrings and many character names (several of them already dead!) to remember and keep straight. I did feel a bit like making notes at one point about who was who, but Reichs includes enough reminders to help her readers out, and this never actually became necessary.I read this in two days, as it just kept pulling me back in. If you've enjoyed other Tempe Brennan novels, I'm sure you'd like Spider Bones as well.

Spider Bones
I found this plot hard to follow at times as I pat track of who was who and who was buried where

Tempe in full form
Neat scientific twist to this multilayered case. Nice split between Hawaii Montreal and Carolina. Defy anyone to work it out

Good, intriguing read
As always a good well written read, fascinating facts and good dense ( almost impenetrable) plot but does Temp always have to end up in a life threatening situation. It adds nothing to the story and is so predictable and boring.

Oh dear
Oh dear. I've read quite a few of the Brennan series - but this one is awful. Soooooo confusing due to the mountain of acronyms, French-Canadian job titles, Hawaiian street names and Samoans. It's all over the place. And don't get me started on the pages and pages of information on JPAC (and then an extensive section on what it is at the end). It sounds like a very worthy organisation (repatriating the bodies of American service personnel) but most of it whooshes right over the head of people who are not American.Plus lots of tiny things that were left hanging. Why was her neighbour complaining about the cat and was it the same neighbour that then looked after her house? Why was Ryan so persistently flirty in the face of such coldness? What about the guy who elbowed her? (trying not to spoil the plot there). There was just too much going on, too many locations, too many pages that wandered off into describing streets around Hawaii. I found myself page turning from quite early on in the book. Finally ***Spoiler alert*** I have no idea how a woman who is supposed to be there to analyse corpses is allowed to interrogate suspects and be at the heart of a police investigation. That bit was just too far fetched for me and really spoiled it. Oh and despite mentioning she was no longer allowed in she was taken into classified areas.Odd that this one is number 13 when earlier ones have seemed so much more polished. One to avoid - but the Temperance Brennan series is generally good.
