Things are not always as they seem - a gripping story
This book is a real page turner! It is written in such a way that you are regularly questioning events and characters which adds to the excitement and suspense of this gripping story. The suspense creeps up on you until you get to a point where you just cannot put the book down! Plenty of twists and elements of surprise that keep the reader hooked right to the last sentence. A highly entertaining and gripping read from a wonderful writer.

Dusting around the edges
The breakout book that launched the literary career of gazillion-selling author Frieda McFadden, and it’s easy to see why this book was such a hit. The story grips the reader from the start with an intriguing set up, and then constantly cranks up the tension throughout. There is enough mystery to keep the reader guessing about the truth behind the characters, and we’re never entirely sure where the book is heading. There are plenty twists (some obvious, and some that you just won’t see coming). There are times when credibility is stretched to breaking point and the ending perhaps feels a bit rushed, but the writing is sharp and the story is well told. The inevitable Netflix adaptation is on its way and may or may not do the book justice. But either way, it’s unlikely to detract in any way from the book’s popularity. If you can over look the plot holes and paper-thin characterization, then this book is a compulsive read. However, in spite of its readability , it is also instantly forgettable.

Kept me hooked from start to finish
A 4.75 star rating from me. What a gripping rollercoaster of a read. This story hooked me from the very beginning and kept me engaged right through to the end. It’s fast paced, easy to follow, and genuinely entertaining. It does become slightly predictable in the second half, but even then, it still managed to deliver more than I expected. There were enough twists and turns to keep things interesting, and it definitely keeps you on your toes. The writing style is simple and accessible, which made it a really easy read. I also liked how the character backstories were revealed in small pieces throughout the book, rather than long drawn out chapters. It all comes together nicely towards the end without feeling heavy. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a quick, fast paced read with plenty of twists.

Plot seems implausible but it kept me hooked
I can't remember what was the trigger to buy this book but it seems to review well (and has sold huge numbers). I think I may have confused it with The Maid but I liked the sound of this book so decided to give it a go. By the look of the cover it's going to be great. I'd not heard of the author but was interested in her combination of medical and psychological thriller writing as careers. I was also impressed with her long list of novels. This book has 328 pages split into 61 chapters and was first published in 2022. From the start it is clear that something awful has happened. We are then taken back a few months to find out what. There are plenty of secrets and some very weird events. The readers senses are heightened and there is a lot of suggestion. The narrative starts looking from Millie's perspective - she is very cautious of her environment although is not an innocent party which adds plenty of layers. The concept of the plot is tight with a small cast of characters making it an unchallenging book to read but there are enough twists to keep the attention all the way through. Gradually the story moves along, all the time keeping enough tension to make you think it is all going to go wrong at any moment. The prologue has introduced the idea of a body in the attic but there is a lot to be discovered before the book gets to that. Complexity is added and, whilst it all seems implausible, I did get hooked in and I loved the ending. It seemed unlikely that this book is going to be developed into a series but that is what has happened and I'm definitely going to get the next one.

A page turner
This is a very good, well plotted thriller. I did guess ‘the twist you never saw coming’ because the blurb said there was one. And once I know that I can usually work out the twist based on the most surprising thing it could be. And voila that was the twist. And there was a bit of extra twist because one twist is never enough. Written in the first person the author is in very tight control of the story and the reader only really sees what she wants us to. Well, that’s ok if you are a really good writer and McFadden certainly falls into that category. She keeps us guessing with a tale just this side of believable. (Don’t over think it) It felt very much like a long treatment for a film script and I believe it now is a film. It’s definitely a page turner. So why am I only giving it 3? Well written. Well plotted. Page turner. Big twist and smaller twist towards end and at end. I’m giving it 3 because I guessed the ending. I felt slightly manipulated by the author and my brain didn’t get to do enough work. I think it’s not a book that will stay with me after reading. But I’m about to read the sequel, so that’s a compliment to the author. This time I’m going to try and avoid knowing if there is a twist or not. And just let my mind roam. As a PS I see the second book is basically the first book all over again so it’s going directly to the charity shop with this one.

Would 100% re-read
This book was not only nail biting, but I as just so immersing I could not put the thing down! This book was read over the course of a couple of hours and when I tell you I picked up the second book and I carried on reading, it was that good. The plots and twists they throw at you is beautiful, never a dull moment reading it! If thrillers are your kind of thing, I suggest picking this up and having a go. The thing I took from the book was “it is not what you know, but who you know.” You will soon find this out towards the end of the book! If you’re looking for a book that you do not want to put down. This is the book!

Oh Wow!!! This book is totally awesome and I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover. This book is the best psychological thriller that I have ever read. I love Freida McFadden and her books are always good but this one is excellent. This book has twists and turns that I never would have though of. I highly recommend the book to you all and I know you are going to love "The Housemaid." I sure did. Please let us know what you think. Millie recently got released from prison and now she is having a very hard time hanging onto a job of any kind. And then she applies for a job as housemaid for Nina Winchester. The Winchesters' are one of the most prominent families in this town. If I get this job I will be all set and can finally move out of my car, The house where I would be working is gorgeous and the job is an in-house position, and the pay is great. The family consists of Nina, her husband Andrew and her eight year old daughter Cecilia. And hooray Nina finally calls I got the job! I start the next day, Cleaning, cooking and occasionally taking care of Cecilia. This job is going to be easy. My bedroom is in the attic but I do have my own bathroom. Boy was I wrong about the easy job, Cecilia is a spoiled little brat and cries about everything, Nina is a night mare she has lost it and she can not be all there. The second day I am there I come down and she is destroying the kitchen all because she left her PTA notes on the counter and now they are gone. She says I stole her notes. The only good thing with the job is the husband Andrew, he is so nice and very handsome too. Will I be able to put up with Nina and all of her fits? Will she fire me? Can I ever get alone with Cecilia? And most of all can I keep Andrew off of my mind and respect that he is a married man?

I enjoyed this story about Mille, a housemaid who struggles to find work due to her criminal record. Millie meets Nina who hires her as a housemaid, but instantly she struggles with her new employer's changing moods. She knows more is going on in the household; all the while falling for Nina's husband, Andrew but not getting along with his daughter, Cecilia. Millie meets Enzo, the family's gardener who acts strangely and warns her about the family, telling her to be careful and that more is going on. She is confused and dislikes Nina who treats her badly, finding a way to resolve the strange incidences. What I loved about this story was the action-filled drama, suspense, twists and turns, and brilliant, deep characters. I so recommend this first book in this series. Loved it.
