The Lord of Psalm 23: Jesus Our Shepherd, Companion, and Host

Exceptional book. I have sent it to several people that have been experiencing difficult times. After reading it each of them commented how much this book has helped them, especially gleaning deeper meaning from the Psalm. I highly recommend this book.

David Gibson has written an awesome devotional look at Psalm 23. At under 150 pages this can be read quickly but it is better to read slowly, savoring each page. Wonderfully written full of deep theology and careful study of probably the most well known Psalm in the Bible. Much here to ponder and meditate upon. Full of comfort and wise words. Would make a great gift for any Christian friend. Be encouraged, take up and read.

This is an amazing book filled with wonderful insights. Psalm 23 is my favorite, and I loved how the author thoughtfully broke down each part of it. It was both encouraging and easy to understand.

Gibson invites us to match his pace and depth in a fresh analysis of a psalm so familiar that the idea of discovering something new or accepting something different doesn’t seem likely. He respects the work of many others who have written on Psalm 23, and he does not tout the originality of his own insights. If you have never observed the psalm’s connection to God’s care of Israel during their wilderness wanderings or recognized the Lord Jesus as the Chief Shepherd of those who hear His voice and follow Him, you are in for rich pastoral applications that I found comforting in a dark valley I was going through. Central to the book’s thesis is the idea that God has come to earth as man to be present with us until we go to be with Him in the presence of God forever. For example, in the final chapter, Gibson makes this bold assertion based on a conditional premise for which he has argued throughout the book. “If it is true that ‘you are with me’ (Ps. 23:4) is the heart of the whole Bible in a nutshell, then it is also true that in the closing words of Psalm 23 we have the climax of the Bible’s whole storyline expressed in a final, beautiful confession of faith: I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (v. 6)” I would caution you to question whether the redemptive theme “you are with me” can bear the weight of the entirety of Scripture. God is glorified by more than saving sinners and restoring saints to the fellowship with Him that was lost in the fall and is regained through faith in the person and work of Christ. The trajectory of His eternal purpose, as I understand it, does not merely bring us home to be with Him in heaven, but involves bringing His kingdom to earth. God is redeeming not only sinners, but His entire creation. If “you are with me” (Psalm 23:4, 6) is at the heart of the whole Bible, it may serve us well to remember that even the heart—for all of its strategic importance—is but a part.

I have been blessed by Psalm 23 and its truths for years. Gibson does a wonderful job taking a familiar psalm and mining precious jewels by digging deep and showing just how amazing The Shepherd is to those whom belong to Him.

VERY well done! The author dives deeper in such a way that it opens Ps23 to reveal the Lordship of Christ and the plan of salvation. Anyone reading this will be encouraged, strengthened, and changed. After I finished reading it I immediately read it again to make sure I didn’t miss anything. A game changer!

This book is such a rich and comforting read. It takes you deeply into Psalm 23 and the journey is precious and meaningful. I love the way the author writes. Definately a keeper for years to come, one which I will return to time and time again. As i received it as a gift, I have now given it to a number of people as a gift. One told me she keeps it on her night stand for quick access. The Lord is our wonderful Shepherd.

It is ok

This is simply the best exposition of the 23rd Psalm I have ever read. Opened my eyes again to the safety and security that exists for those who trust in the Lord. A must read for any believer. Highly recommended.
