Expected to find fault with this title but my skeptism was short lived.
Max Payne 3 is an exceptional game with a fantastic gameplay engine. The physics are realistic, the Ai adapts to situations so one gun fight rarely resembles the other and despite the emphasis on gunplay, it's not just another mindless shooter. On some difficulties strategy is demanded. I think most people would agree the major selling point in the Max Payne franchise is the bullet time / bullet dodge technology, a product of the matrix era. Having played the previous 2 games on an earlier system I had expected the next generation port to have problems. Rockstar rarely disappoints, whether it's remaining true to the story or developing ideas, I believe they made very sound decisions. Rockstar also has a really great handle on facial recognition software so games like LA noire/ GTA / Max Payne often have fantastic graphics and reallistic live action sequences.I turned off any aim-assiting options which provides a free manual aim relying on user input. There's every bullet trajectory angle and it seems to react on hit detection. You can really work an environment ; taking out a section of brick so for a better view / Tagging a flammable object for a distraction or to target a cluster / Diving or remaining prone up stairs to protect your neck. There's an excellent array of weaponry to choose from ISP is often necessary and you get a good feel for which weapons best serve a situation - range / accuracy / firing rate. Like previous titles you can wield weapons in each hand and ammo conservation becomes an important factor of survival as with stockpiling medical supplies. Plenty of trophy based collectables and skill based 'grinds'.The game even provides online features which I've yet to explore fully yet you can syncronise your information with Rockstar's social club and it appears to contain various deathmatch / team modes you'd expect from most FPS titles these days. Also appears to have friend team building and customization options for forming your own personal squad.Personally I love challenging mature games. I started my first playthrough on Hard. I love the fact there are 2 locked difficulties for higher levels of gameplay. Also after approximately 12 hours on the game, I'd only covered 4% of the total trophy material which indicates value and extends the play time. The story is dark and deals with some mature themes so I'd moderate it before buying it for your nephew but fans of the series will come to expect the extreme face of humanity from the characters. It's not devoid of comic moments. Although the humour is quite dark or light hearted it's a welcome relief from some of the stressful momments. Death, addiction, politics - these are just some of the themes. It's a wild ride with more action than any John Woo film.I'd recommend to fans of 3rd and 1st person shooters even if you've never experienced the franchise before. Once you start diving like Chow Yun Fat you won't want to stop.

Not a payneful return....
S T O R YNine years have passed since the events of the previous game. Max has retired from his job and developed a serious addiction to booze and painkillers, which make a junkie, look like an angel in comparison. Max ends up in Brazil hired as private security for a wealthy family in Sao Paulo. After leaving behind some troubles in New York, Payne attempts to start a new life in Brazil, but all is never as simple as it seems. The wealthy Branco family are an easy target for thugs and street gangs, and this is where Max's protection skills come into action. The Brancos become the target of several kidnapping and this strangely ties in with the presence of Max in Brazil.Max's painkiller addiction is fantastically portrayed and the way it impacts on his life holds the story together. Sao Paulo is a character in itself, its grimy and decayed façade compliment Max's journey. There is a healthy dose of back-story thrown in to provide continuity from previous games, which is a great way of introducing new players. I found the antagonists to be underdeveloped and not very interesting throughout the story. The excessive inner monologue of Max became overbearing at times and a little unnecessary.G R A P H I C S & S O U N DThe glitz and glamour of Sao Paulo truly come alive, but simultaneously its criminal underbelly is vividly realised. The wealthy socialites of the city live it large in clubs and penthouse suites, yet the lower class citizens earn a tougher living in the slums. New York City makes an appearance as we are presented with flashback sequences involving Max before he ventured away from the US. Level design may be linear, but the city vista of Sao Paolo makes a striking impact, and the gloominess of NYC is very stark. The grittiness of NYC brings back great memories of the previous MP games, and adds a further layer of emotional demise on Max's behalf. Max is always talking to himself, so this is where Rockstar have used pop-up text to splash across the screen whenever key words are spoken. The presentation has a graphic novel feel to it and this is matched by the cinematography. Character models are well crafted and display believable animations. Bodies collide with surfaces realistically and display impressive ragdoll physics. Lighting is spectacular as its bounces and shimmers off of surfaces, especially within the Sao Paulo slums where it lights up the gloomy alleyways. The soundtrack works incredibly well to match the reminiscing moments of Max and when our drugged-up hero needs to do a little wet work. Voice acting is a solid component, James McCaffrey outdoes himself as the troubled Max and the supporting cast provide competent vocal work. Sound design is impressive, guns sounds powerful, Sao Paulo crackles with all kinds of noises and using bullet time creates some truly delicious headshot sounds. The texture quality can seem quite low at times, but this doesn't severely detract from the overall graphical quality. Sound design is slightly marred by the repetitive ramblings of NPCs and occasional out-of-sync dialogue.G A M E P L A YBullet-time is at the forefront of the action again. The shoot dodge mechanic is still effective in pulling off ridiculous shots and acrobatic stunts. The newest addition to bullet-time is that Max can automatically use a painkiller (if available) when severely wounded, which enables to return fire upon the enemy who shot him. It's a tricky mechanic to work with, but it can be a real lifesaver when surrounded by loads of enemies. Max isn't as athletic as he used to be, so his movements can feel a little slow when diving around.A cover system has been put in place to give you a little help, and it really comes in useful when moving from one checkpoint to the next. Getting out of a cover spot can be a tricky proposition, since the aim of enemies is so damn good! There is a very useful blind-fire option available, which can quickly clear-out annoying enemies. Level design can vary, as it attempts to restrict your movement, or gives you a little more freedom to work with. Shoot dodging your way through hordes of enemies isn't the only thing you'll do, there are some fantastic on-rail sequences to blast through. These sections are some of the finer highlights of the experience, providing wonderful cinematic action and riveting gameplay. In this game, headshots really do matter! Enemies can be very annoying as they come at you in waves, so its good practice to refine your aim. On the subject of enemies, you can expect to come across average street thugs, but then crossing paths with heavily armed mercenaries who are able to take much more punishment. The variety of guns is excellent and some of them can be combined to create some effective dual wield options. Ammo isn't just merrily dished out and it's important to make every shot count. The cover system can be a little tricky to use and it seems it hasn't been advanced since past Rockstar games this generation (using a cover system). The shootouts can become a little repetitive, as there seems to be no real invention when it comes to NPCs closing in for the kill. There are some mild issues with overall pacing, too much narrative can bog things down and unnecessarily ruin the fluidity of the gameplay.O V E R A L LMax Payne 3 is an ambitious cinematic title, while it loses some of the series' renowned film noir aspects; it still retains the gritty nature of Max's demise. The campaign is meaty and packs a solid punch. Visually, it isn't the best looking game, but the vistas of Sao Paulo are spectacular. The body count will rapidly rise with every shootout, even though certain sequences can become monotonous affairs. An overdose of painkillers cause death, but Max is a deliverer of death himself (to those who deserve it!)

MIND BLOWING
As normal Rockstar have surpassed all expectations delivering the newest and best technology in the industry in one exceedingly well put together package with an extra serving of pure awesomeness. From the way max moves shifting his body weight so perfectly and magnificanly beautiful, to the awe inspiring graphics and scenery, this game has raised the bar for its competitors, sitting well with its predecesores. Whem i ordered the game at first I was worried that like other games the develpors would allow their ostentatious graphics to take an unfair priority choking other aspects of the game, such as the raw gritty story line we all loved in max payne 1 and 2. However, these fears were quickly put to rest when I started playing, the story line goes in depth into max's gritty past, with max's sharp and thoughtful narrative guiding you every step of the way. The campaign levels have been inteligently degined to provide cover (which is just as destructable as it should be) whilst encouraging player to use bullet time to move though large groups of enemys unhindered. The targetting system prvides the first person bonus of easiness to use and acurracy while mantaining the third person advanterges of movement and seeing what's going on all aroung max making bullet time that bit more spectacular. Over all, if you're looking for a relatively empty meaningless game where you get to shoot stuff while shouting USA!, try battlefield or some other generic shooter - don't wate you time here. However, if you desire an intensely beautiful intelligent work of art that will blow you mind, you're in the right place.

dual wielding guns, bullet time, painkillers What else ?
