Will it strim thistles?

Hi, yes the standard nylon spool copes with thick dock plants and thistles and will also shred chicken wire if you are careless. For extra tough "woody" stem plants there is a heavy duty attachment which replaces the nylon spool, this is essentially a two fixed lengths of hard plastic but you could also adapt this to use loops of coated steel wire which would cut through the toughest plants.

Can yoy attach line stripps at 3 mm thick
