Great way to get kids interested in Shakespeare when otherwise they may struggle. This one helped my nephew understand Macbeth better ready for his GCSEs. Review: Manga "Macbeth" - Ideal for both the student of Shakespeare's play and a seasoned Manga fan, the text is, necessarily, abridged, but the salient points and "flavour" of the speeches remain. Set in post-apocalyptic Japan, the main protagonists are depicted as warlords in a ravaged world. Because of this theme, presenting the Witches as snake-demons and Macduff as a four-armed, gigantic mutated warrior, seems perfectly appropriate- and also neatly explains why Macduff could never have been born naturally! The text is clear, the storyline easy to follow ( the chief characters are presented in colour, with a brief description of each, at the front of the book, which gives a handy reference guide to the relationships between them) and, unlike "traditional" Manga , the book reads left-to-right, in the Western style, which is less daunting than a more "purist" manga presentation. The drawing is excellent, the setting interesting, which should encourage the reader to enjoy the entire play as an exciting and slightly gruesome adventure story. The memorable depiction of the characters and setting should remain in the mind's eye for a long time. I consider this a useful teaching aid as supporting, while not replacing the original text . It also stands alone as an enjoyable graphic novel.

The perfect mix
I love Manga and I love Shakespeare, so this seemed a must. I wasn't disappointed and I now own Othello and Hamlet. I will eventually get the whole set. Art wotk is great, stories are true to original but with imaginative Interpretations.

modern interpretation
This book was a great example of fusing an old story with a futuristic outlook. Keeps the Shakespeare bug alive.

Even though I have read most of the material William Shakespeare wrote I am always interested in new approaches to his many plays. I recently purchased this graphic novel (Manga Shakespeare Macbeth illustrated by Robert Deas) version of Macbeth for a bargain price on Amazon. The wonderful illustrations really make the story come alive. I found this 207 page volume fascinating because this graphic novel series takes a Japanese manga approach to the story and play of Macbeth. This tragic story is the same with various dialog scenes using many well-known quotes from Shakespeare. This story is about murder, revenge and power hungry greed. Macbeth and Banquo have won a battle over an invading army, and the traitorous Thane of Cawdor is among the prisoners. On their way home Macbeth and Banquo run into three witches, who made some prophecies. They predict Macbeth will inherit the title of Thane of Cawdor and will become King. Banquo will father a dynasty of Kings, but he never becomes king himself. I never give away too much information when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader. If you are into the Japanese Manga series and also love reading Shakespeare’s works you may want to check out this Mana Macbeth volume. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Zen Poetry Moments: Haiku and Senryu for special occasions).

Zentrale Stellen findet man.

I bought this for a book club, and it was chosen by someone who loved both manga and Shakespeare. I love Shakespeare and MacBeth, so I thought I would appreciate this more than I did. While I do admire some odes to the original play, it's just really hard to accept post-apocalyptic samurai warriors as "The Scottish Play". That being said, I have heard of some young readers really enjoying this series and getting into Shakespeare's works through these books. Just one word of caution, every single one of us in the book club had our books fall apart almost instantly. The pages are not well secured so even gentle use will result in you picking pages up off of the floor. If you are trying to win over a young reader, maybe try for an e-book version...

I showed my students the manga versions of Shakespeare's tragedies, and several of them borrowed these editions to read overnight. I plan to keep a deep inventory of these versions in my classroom's bookshelves so that my students might continue to become "hooked on Shakespeare."

Kiddo used it instead of the "regular" story.
