'20 walking routes in and around LIVERPOOL, written by local experts'
I have a number of these ‘HIDDEN WALK’ books now, but this is not one of my favourites. The single page maps on the longer walks are handily duplicated to save turning the page back, but are generally that bit smaller in format + across the spine can be tricky at times, depending on where you are in the book.Measuring roughly 12.5 cm x 18 cm, it is informative in what it offers but, as it is not designed as a comprehensive guide, other resources are likely to be required. Each title in the series is written by a local expert, in this case it is a duo, namely Claire E. Rider + Neil McDonald:‘...both trained as Blue Badge Tourist Guides…...Together, they established and ran ‘Brilliant Tours’ and ‘Beatleswalk’ very successfully for seven years. Claire plans to return to education but they both enjoy being freelance tourist driver Guides in Liverpool and across the UK.’As is pointed out in the book, some of the walks up to the Cathedral are quite hilly, but you are rewarded with a spectacular view once you are there. The writing also highlights a significant history many may not be aware of.The current stock images + the ’LOOK INSIDE’ facility above give an idea of the layout including the short ‘INTRODUCTION’ & ‘HOW TO USE THIS BOOK’, to see if it is the style for you & yours.ooOooTightly bound, the card cover with an image of ‘Dazzle Ferry and Liverpool Waterfront’, by Neil Mcdonald, opens to 128 shiny finish pages, split over the 20 walks.Uniform in the layout and believed to be correct at the time of publication, the KEY INFORMATION for each walk is presented as the back cover is, in white print on a blue background, namely:~ start & finish~ nearest postcode~ distance~ time~ terrainThe rest of the text is a reasonable size in black, with titling & sub-titling in blue. Each walk has a short INTRODUCTION + a detailed street map that, as previously mentioned, can be tricky if over the spine area due to the binding. It can also be tricky to read in places with the route as a red & white track between the locations on the map that are marked numerically as red dots, e.g. ‘ WALK 13 ~ Stanley Dock and Stanley Park (The canal, football stadium and Everton Brow).’Blue stars within the short paragraphs, and on the maps, denote ‘PLACES OF INTEREST’.Interspersing the text, the colourful, full page shots are indexed & accredited as relevant on the very last page, including ‘New Brighton Lighthouse’, on page 117 (image below refers), also from Neil Mcdonald. The ‘Key to Map Symbols’ is on the inside back cover.15 images attached ©Neil Mcdonald, Claire E. Great little guide
I received mine last weekend and sat down to read through. I know Liverpool well having lived there most of my life and have just found out that I know less than I thought! The routes are great and thought through. Take a walk for an hour and you will gain an insight in to Liverpool whether you live there or visiting. Thanks and look forward to the next edition!
