Impressed! Perfect amount of bounce for practicing pipe-band sticking
This simple but effective practice pad give just the right amount of bounce for practicing stick control.A long time ago I played snare and bass drums (not both at the same time) in a pipe band, eventually becoming the Drum Major. It's been a long time since I've picked up a pair of sticks, but my next-door neighbour's son has started learning to play a drum kit, and his appalling stick control is annoying me! It seems that nobody bothers practicing the rudiments, and just wants to go straight into playing a full kit.It might not seem like there's much use for mummy-daddies and paradiddles in a rock band. Wrong. Stick control is vitally important - let the stick do the work, and you control it.Anyway. with that little rant over, let's talk about the pad! It's basically an octagonal sheet of thick MDF with a sheet of softish padding on the back to protect the table, and a firm, rubbery material on the top to represent the drum skin. The pad is exactly 8" across. It's advertised as an 8" practise pad, so I'm not sure what the Italian reviewer is complaining about. In use, I find the bounce of the top surface is a very close match for a marching band drum. It's maybe not quite as hard as the kevlar heads we had on the pipe-band drums, but it's close. Despite being a bit rusty (it's over thirty years since I last played with the pipe band), I found I could still rattle off the standard 4/4 patterns, and a few variations we used to chuck in to keep ourselves on the ball. The pad has a thread on the back to it can be attached to a stand. I don't have a suitable stand, so I can't tell you what the thread fits. It might be interesting to make a complete practise kit, although it would be far easier to simply place the pad on top of the drum skin.At £12, this is highly recommended for anyone who wants to improve their stick control.
