You'll heavy duty scissors, and a utility razor knife to open it and it's extremely hard to not cut into the new pillow or yourself. The pillow is vacuum packed inside super thick tough plastic and then that is wrapped with heavy tape and crazy glue or something. After opening it didn't smell and it popped right up to size quickly and was in use on the chair. I recommend it. Seems rugged enough. Durable. I have a pretty short torso so headrests on most couches hit me totally wrong. This item fixed that, but was better with a minor modification. I cut a slit in the back of the pillow and removed some of the stuffing in the middle to create an indent for my head, and sewed it back up. The napping on the material hides this well. Made it much more comfortable. It would be even better if it was made from a softer material though… it’s a bit on the scratchy side, which accounts for the four stars instead of five. The grippy underside works well to keep the pillow in place, and it comes with an additional sticky Velcro strip that you can add if desired.
