It includes the somewhat grim and still-dangerous lives of the multi-national seafarers that crew the container ships, the very patchy regulation (flags of convenience etc.), piracy, bad food, environmental impacts of shipping, as well as facts and figures about the industry, but all written in an easy-read and journalistic style. The author sees a lot at first hand, as a guest on a container ship from Europe to the Far East. Inevitably there are some things I'd have liked to have had discussed in more detail, and just occasionally I felt the treatment of some topics was a bit thin, or under-researched and anecdotal. Doesn't get to the heart of the issue. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know." *by L***A on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 June 2023* I was expecting a book about the shipping industry, but got a selection of remotely connected essays about life on a container ship, Somali pirates, pollution of the ocean, surviving shipwrecks etc. There were chapters on Flags of Convenience and problems with the regulation of the industry, but the book was written in 2013 and, it seems, have not been updated. Like any non-fiction book, it has become, I feel, slightly dated. Or maybe it has not – but how do I know. I am not an expert and turned to this book to tell me more about the shipping industry. I feel that I know even less about shipping then before I started to read this. As Einstein said, "The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know."
