the kindle version is not for me.
A book is a hard way to learn knitting. I need a video. However, the reference terms and definitions are a valuable resource. As a beginner, my biggest problem were the pictures for the patterns. They are not detailed enough for me to judge whether I want to make the garment, hat or sock. Also, crochet pictures were confusing and one section about weaving in was actually written for crochet not knitting. While I assume weaving in would be same for both techniques, it was confusing and made me wonder what else wasn’t edited properly. It would be very discouraging to try faulty patterns as a beginner. I just couldn’t risk it.There are a good number of patterns in the book and if you can figure them out then you will probably enjoy this e-version of the book. The paperback might be better for me.Over all I am disappointed and will try to find a different basic guide to use as a reference book.

Pictures are Bad and Do Not Match the Patterns
I am pretty disappointed in this book especially because I did make a point of reading the reviews and so many others liked it. There are no photographs, only illustrations and the illustrations are not very good. And they do not match the patterns either.Take my picture of the baby bootie for example. It clearly has ribbing on the cuff, yet the entire pattern is done in garter stitch so rubbing is not possible with how the pattern is written. That pattern in and of itself is poor. I followed all of the directions exactly and the baby bootie that resulted is not good (seen in the picture as well).Other patterns have images that don’t match the pattern. For example the “easy knit shawl” on page 224 clearly has fringe yet there are no directions on how to add the fringe.Plus many of the directions are clunky or worded weird. For the easy knit shawl pattern it gives a long winded explanation on how to do the increase for the row. It took me and my friend reading it several times to figure out it was describing knit front back but the book never used that term to clarify the directions. And on the previously mentioned baby booties pattern it says “create 26 stitches” instead of “cast on” and doesn’t clarify a specific style of cast on that would suit this pattern best.Overall disappointed in this book and would not recommend it at all. Save your money.

Introduces the basics of knitting
I have always wanted to learn how to knit, and this book teaches me to do just that. THe book introduces all the materials and equipment you will need to get started as well as how to do the basic starting steps. This includes the basic stitches you will need to start any project. THen there are some basic projects to get you working with what you just learned. These include things like socks, hats, and scarves. I found this book easy to read and understand. I learned a lot alongside the book.

Not for beginners
As a still inexperienced knitter, I was hoping to have a purchase a book that would provide a good grounding in the basics and thereafter, a range of patterns that I could try to develop more experience. Based on the Table of Contents, this book seemed promising. However, regarding the basics and in the ebook version, there no photographs (or line drawings as appropriate) so that you can follow specific techniques (how to knit, purl, use circular needles, etc), or to see the difference between alpaca and wool, or the difference between American versus Continental style knitting. It is just text that is not very well formatted, and so does not facilitate easy reading. For the patterns in the five books that are included, there are a few basic line drawings, but no photographs of what the final product should look like (at the very least) or to show some of the intricate work that some patterns would require. So, there very little incentive to try the patterns.Overall, this feels like a lazy attempt to produce a “knitting bible”. I am very disappointed with this purchase.

Valuable reference
This book is a valuable reference for terminology and for learning to read patterns. There are many references to pictures and illustrations, but the pictures and illustrations are nowhere to be found and you ill still need to refer to You Tube to see how to do a particular stitch or other operation. Illustrations would make this a much more useful book. Sometimes the language is strangely phrased as if it was composed in a different language and then translated to English making some things difficult to understand.

2.5 Stars
This COULD have been an excellent knitting resource set, with a bit more thought and planning put into it by the author. There IS quite a bit of good technique information included which was helpful.Unfortunately, it is all presented in a boring, unappealing way. NO photos or color throughout, just black and white drawings. Patterns are also rather old-fashioned. Starting with socks as a first project was not a good idea. Much better would have been a simple hat and scarf set or something similar. Socks take more skill than that. This is not a knitting resource that I would use or recommend.😕

Black and white textbook with hand drawings
Very disappointing. Unlike most knitting instructional books with beautiful photos, this one is filled with text with black and white hand drawn pictures. I can’t really envision the steps or finished product from these poorly drawn pictures, nor does it inspire me to read the pages of plain text to figure it out. I’d rather read a calculus textbook.

Knitting an ancient but still beautiful pastime
When I was a child at home with us there was a retired aunt who spent much of her time knitting. On long winter afternoons I would sit beside her and watch her knitting and I was fascinated by the wool yarn that quickly took on different and colourful shapes, a knit, a scarf, a hat, a doily and many other handicrafts. My passion was knitting and she would patiently explain to me what she was doing and how. I had learnt but life took me elsewhere and I forgot knitting. Now I am also retired and have a lot of free time and want to take up the old passion again. I bought this 5-volume book that is a real encyclopaedia of knitting and I am studying it. The book is very well done, it is divided into topics each volume contains one, socks, hats, waistcoats, shawls and animal patterns. There is everything on the subject from the basics to more advanced notions, the different stitches you can use and lots of techniques depending on the work you want to create. I am enjoying it and will soon start putting into practice what I am learning again

Very interesting book about knitting
Awesome book on how to start knitting! It is suitable both for those who have already tried but have not achieved a good result, and for those who are trying for the first time. Thanks to this book it is possible to discover various knitting techniques, along with everything you need. You can make socks, hats, shawls and much more! I will start knitting right away thanks to this book!
