Happy endings & hugs all round
Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! Vol. 3 collects the final issues of this series - #13-17 – which concludes the Black Cat story begun in the previous volume, runs through a couple of further adventures, before winding up the current series with a trip to the mall and everyone from the regular cast, including the people from the neighbouring offices, such as Howard and the lady with the monkey appearing in a final double-page spread. So, if you haven’t read the previous volumes don’t start here, or you won’t know who half the people are.If you have read the previous volumes, then everything it neatly tied up in a big pink bow (there’s even a letter from Jennifer Walters), and they all live happily ever after; until the next time. And now the serious stuff. Marvel have always (since I was a child) tried out ethnically-diverse characters and female artists and writers. Then as now, ethnically-diverse characters never sold well-enough to carry a series very long; even Luke Cage only survived when teamed-up with Danny Rand (who only survived because he was teamed-up with Luke Cage), as their combined following was just enough to keep the series viable.Female writers and artists did well enough, providing they were producing traditional superhero books, which is what Marvel produced. Nowadays, with the direct market, Marvel appear to have switched to short run titles rather than long runs of consecutively numbered ones, which has given them the opportunity to publish a wider range of titles and try out diverse characters and creative teams. They still can’t sell Carole Danvers, though they have been trying since the 1970s, and even Chris Claremont couldn’t get her to fly (and wasn’t he the one who depowered her in the first place?). However, they keep trying.Don’t look on this as a failed series, look upon it as a mini/maxi-series that reached its end (and it might have been, the recent Mockingbird series was commissioned as an 8-issue series), though if it sold well enough, they’ll bring it back.PS: Why is there a bracket around the ‘S’ in the title? Is there a reference I’m missing?
