A treasure of a book. If you can't stand heat, though, be warned. After several attempts my husband went from a whole pepper, to half a pepper, to none, and it's still plenty spicy with just the spices.

Great little cook book
This is a great little cook book but don't let 'little' put you off! It's what it says on the cover "housewife's cookbook". It's not Maduhr Jaffrey dinner party type stuff but what people eat every day. With the basic spices you can create a splendid variety of Indian dishes, one more tastey than the last and not at huge expense. It has a good selection of vegitarian and other dishes. I have known and used this book for abt 20 years. I have lost it and repurchased it twice. It has stood me in very good stead and impressed others.Go buy it, tuck in and enjoy!

An excellent little book!
Like, the previous reviewer, I too have used and loved this recipe book for almost twenty years. And I second everything she's written about it. It appears very simple and unassuming, but that belies the excellence of the recipes. My old book is looking a bit ragged, so I came to Amazon in hopes it was still available. Very happy to see it is, and that Laxmi Khurana has another follower.

Recipes from Indian home
I love this book. Recipes are simple and like what is served in homes, not restaurants. Very grateful to own this recipe book.

So good I bought it twice!
My ancient original of this book gave up the ghost recently so, when I found it here again, I jumped at the chance. I can honestly say that this was the book that taught me all I really needed to know about down to earth, authentic Indian family cookery. Laxmi Khurana is my kitchen goddess and so many of these recipes are weekend staples. If you're looking for a well written introduction, buy this. Don't expect fancy photography but the smells coming out of your kitchen and the anticipation of the taste are worth way more than a pretty picture. If this version lasts the 35 years that my last one did, I'll be a happy woman!

A must have for curry lovers
This is a gem of a book. First published in the 1970’s it’s got some fantastic recipes. My friend had a copy which prompted me to order one. I’d never normally choose a recipe book without pictures but this one is brilliant-mainly dried spices and all recipes tried taste great! I’ve lost count of the number of copies that I’ve given to family and friends!

Essential, simple to follow..great starter book .. still cooking from it 30 years on !
I've been using this book for over 30 years, recommended it to countless people and I'm on my 4th (kindle now) copy as the picture shows.. the others have literally fallen to bits through so much use, simple to follow, great Indian food, cooked a dish from it last night in fact and the friend staying with me is ordering a copy! Yes I have more complex books using way more spices and techniques.. but I know lots of people who have been put off by the need to master skills and stock up with a huge number of spices at the start.. using this book you need the basic 7 spices plus salt..ginger... chillies and garlic and you’ll be creating great dishes.. you can always move on to more complex dishes as you build up ... Recommended.

If you love Asian food this is good.
If you are a fan of Asian food, this book is really good. Recipes for all, both meat eaters and vegetarians. Recipes for big hearty meals and recipes for snacks. All the ones I have tried taste delicious and there are some that are not available at your local Asian restaurant. Brilliant quick recipes for Indian snacks cooked easily in a wok ( not a fan of deep fryers) are my favourites and although not a vegetarian, the veggie food here is mouthwatering. Reasonably easy to get all the ingredients. Good stuff.

A genuine everyday treasure
Simple to use and making use of everyday ingredients this is the best real life cookery book of curries I've ever found, with the best potato curry. It has practical ideas for full meals or a side that a bit different. Great puds as well. I bought my first copy years ago and the new edition will take its place tucked up the side if the shelf so it's in the kitchen for everyday use. I am not Indian but love the practicality and taste of the real food. Teamed with my tatty Farmers Weekly Cookbook from the 60s, are my best books ( and I've a 600+ cookbook collection)
