For notebook/tablet use the cable is fine but for a desktop I would highly recommend using another, longer cable or buying one if you don't have an extra, longer one. With the one that came with it, I had to lay the HDD on top of my tower because it wouldn't even reach from the top USB port on my tower to the desk which is less than 8 inches from my desk. **Q: What's the difference (besides the look/finish) between this and their standard WD My Passport 2TB 3.0 External USB drive?** A: The regular WD passport is a plastic shell with different piece for top and sides I believe, or thin metal and plastic.
