Wonderful Stories for Children and Adults
I bought the book for a college course and greatly enjoyed it. I did purchase the audiobook version (along with the book), and I highly recommend it. The style and way it's read adds so much to the dynamics of the story.

Lacks full color illustrations of the hardback.
I love the hardback version of this book. Have purchased it for elementary libraries and for myself. Purchased this paperback version as a gift and was very disappointed that it did NOT have the glorious full color illustrations by Jerry Pinckney. It does have his black & white illustrations, is still a wonderful book.

Finally! Uncle Remus as he always ought to have been: Brer Rabbit Without a side of condescension
Julius Lester's retelling take all of the cheesy language and 19th century ideas of race in the Harris telling, and retells Uncle Remus' stories in a hilarious but respectful way. These are funny, entertaining and empowering tales. Hint: read the story to yourself and figure out the wording before reading it aloud.

"That's what Uncle Remus said......."
I was brought up as a toddler listening to my mother read me the tales of Brer Rabbit. It may not be the most popular book on the market because of it's political correctness thing, but these characters are lovable and my grandson loved them. If you remember the Disney movie, "The Song of the South," it was made around the books' characters.

a very authentic re-telling of these stories
This book is like a modern version of the bible. It has to be re-written to be understood by a modern audience as the original text is daunting. We have a few versions of these tales in other books, the most common being brer rabbit falling down the well. My son loved them though they I realize now they were quite sanitized compared to this book, which is closer the original text. This book has the correct feel for how the tales are told in southern voice. However reading it to my five year old son it doesn't feel quite right with Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox always trying to court Miz Meadows and avoiding their own wives. There also is a bit of torture and death. Brer Rabbit always prevails with his wits but sometimes his motivations are greedy to begin with. I would suggest reading each story first before reading it to your kids so you know what is going to happen. The pictures aren't much of anything to look at. I found myself reading it all by myself and being very interested in the origin of each tale. Overall I think for reading to small children the more picture book type versions of this story would be better, this would be best suited for older kids where you could fully discuss the narrative of each story.
