Fine Drive
I've used two Toshiba external drives for many years now, one for my laptop and one for my PS4, and when the laptop seemed to be having more and more trouble recognizing its external drive, even after cleaning the plug contacts, I figured it was time for a new drive. This new drive does not disappoint. In fact, it makes such short work of backing up files that it became clear to me that the previous drive must have been dying for some time... I am amused too that the LED indicator light on this new drive doesn't flash like a coquette blinking her eyes the way the previous drives did. Instead, this drive blinks the LED very slowly and deliberately while it's working, as if to say, "I've got this; nothing to worry about!" At first I had a problem getting the drive to back up my laptop. The computer recognized the drive and the LED lit up solid, but my repeated command "Back up now" kept failing. I tried cleaning the plug contacts, rebooting the laptop, and even reformatting the drive, but still no successful backup. Then I discovered that Windows 10 makes you click on a "Stop using this drive" button (your previous drive) before you tell it to "Add a new drive." Once I had gone through that little ritual, all was well. And indeed, I was amazed how fast the new drive backed up all my files, accomplishing in less than an hour what the old drive had taken a number of hours to do. All in all, this drive does its job, and I trust I will get years of use out of it, as I did the Toshiba's before...

It Just Works
so far so good. This external hard drive is truly compact and portable. 4tb of storage in this size would have been unthinakable ten years ago. These drives are inexpensive now because they are USB 3.0, which has been surpassed by faster iterations. But they still work and are reasonably quick in transfer speeds. Unboxed, plugged in the USB-A to a powered 3.0 hub, and it popped up on my desktop right away, already formatted. Transferred about 2500 video files totalling 2.1 TB. it took a few minutes for the transfer to reach 1% and at first I wondered if I would need to switch to a computer USB port. Nope. All of the files eventually transferred, although it took a few hours. So far they look good and didn't get corrupted. Corruption generally happens due to an unstable power source or a power interruption. And if the blue blinking light won't go on, it could mean your USB port is underpowered. I think the key to not having this problem if you are using a hub is to use one that draws its own power from AC. the drive was pretty quiet during the marathon file transfer session. would buy again.

So far so good for what it is
I just ran a 2 TB backup from a Western Digital "My Passport" -- an almost identical hard drive in all respects -- and so far both perform about the same, and both are good for what they are: small, slow, inexpensive, mass storage devices. These are hard drives, not SSD, so I don't expect them to be especially durable. I DO expect them to be reliable if treated gently. So far, the only difference I can tell between the Toshiba Canvio and the Western Digital My Passport is the Canvio runs a little hotter (probably because its case is plastic rather than metal), and the Canvio vibrates more than the My Passport. Vibration in a hard drive is a bad thing -- it means something rotating is slightly imbalanced -- so the My Passport is ahead on this one. Both drives are slow, but I don't ding them for this because I EXPECT these drives to be slow. If you want fast, pay more for an SSD. These are slow drives by nature. Overall, based on my experiences so far, the Toshiba and Western Digital are pretty much the same and I'd choose based on price. I'll come back and update if either fails in the future.

Definitely serve the purpose
Just what we needed! We had vacation Bible school at our church and I needed something to download the videos for the children daily songs and video. Very convenient and much more space for years to come for more vacation Bible school programs.

So far so good
I got this to make a local backup of my documents and media files. Works perfectly, and the transfer speed is very good. I know hard drives are notorious for having poor reliability long term, so Iโll revisit this review if there is a failure somewhere in the future. So far itโs working great with no issues.
