How many inches are between each shelf?

There is about 4.5 inches between shelves, however, I believe you don't have to fill in every shelf, allowing double the space, but fewer shelves

I have an old one without the crossbars and it is wobblier than the new one with the cross bars. I could lash on some strings in cross tension.
