He brings with him the possibility of restoring Laurence's rank and requests that they come to the aid of the beleaguered Prince Regent of Portugal. The Prince Regent is currently in Brazil and Portugal is key to the hope of beating Napoleon. So, it is to Laurence and Temeraire to come to the Prince Regent's aid.Oh, I love this series. Temeraire and Laurence are quite out of the common way, I'm sure. Check out Fantastic Fiction to get the list of novels in order.The series is basically historical fiction with a dash of fantasy thrown in for good measure. Although it isn't usual fantasy. It is simply that dragons exist and are used by many countries as part of their military forces. Naomi does a great job of making this sound perfectly reasonable. After all, if you had a fire-breathing dragon wouldn't you want to use him to break a blockade?She has really done a great job of imagining the necessary details that come along with having a bunch of dragons in the military. What is really interesting is some of the ideas that Temeraire comes up with about society and a dragon's place in it. I love Temeraire; he is so earnest and funny. He makes a great counterpart to Laurence who is every inch an officer and a gentleman. Laurence sees it as as necessity to do whatever his duty requires of him. His duty to the military and to King and Country. He actually reminds me of Ashley from Gone with the Wind (my favorite book since the 5th grade) , but I like Laurence much better. He isn't a wuss the way Ashley was.Verdict: highly recommended and in fact I just bought the first three books for my dad's birthday.[...]

As the 7th in a long line, this book still delivers on the early promises of the first book. Adventure, culture and lots of dragons! Granted now the series has taken a more fantastic turn than any other, it still places great emphasis on strong characters and riveting action.Most importantly, if you felt the last book was a bit meandering and started to loose its charm; this book fully returns the series to its roots with just a few off-mark but well setup plot points.

This book is far enough into the series that I assume anyone thinking of buying it has already read the previous ones. So with that in mind:1) It's a delightful romp, which is a nice change of pace from some of the grimmer books in the series. Yes, terrible things happen to people, and various people are maimed or die or what not, but insofar as it's a series about military folks, that's to be expected. It's still a fun adventure story and travelogue.2) Iskierka and Granby get a lot of screen time and development, and a lot to do, in this particular book. Fans of the pair should enjoy it immensely.3) The Mayan dragons are fascinating in their own right. It's not only that their culture is interesting, but that it's clearly one in a state of flux, responding to the massive social changes caused by contact with the Europeans. After seeing so many changes rippling through draconic society in England because of Temeraire's contact with other cultures, it's a really interesting change of pace to see another society that's changing as well, but in different ways and for different reasons.4) Did I mention the feathered Mayan dragons? Because they're pretty awesome.Basically, if you liked the series so far, you'll like this book. It's a great addition to the series and I highly recommend it.

Naomi Novik’s 9 volumes of The Novels of Temeraire and an amazing history of Napoleon’s quest for power, combined with imaginative history of Naval Officer Lawrence and Dragon Temeraire’s adventures together. I have read the first 7 in the series and am eager to read the last 2 novels. My only regret is that this particular story will end. The good news is that there are many other stories to enjoy. I look forward to the next adventure.

Diese Friedensmission gestaltet sich jedoch schwieriger als gedacht, da unsere Helden aufgrund einer Verkettung unglücklicher Umstände im Reich der Inkas landen und von dort aus ihren steinigen Weg finden müssen.CRUCIBLE OF GOLD ist mittlerweile der siebte Band in der Saga rund um Temeraire und Naomi Novik kehrt hier nach dem doch enttäuschenden TONGUES OF SERPENTS zu ihren Stärken zurück.Laurence und Temeraire sind mit einer schwierigen Mission konfrontiert und vor allem Laurence zweifelt, ob er für den Dienst in der britischen Armee überhaupt noch geeignet ist. Er macht sich Sorgen, ob er seinen Auftrag mit seinem Gewissen vereinbaren kann, und diese Frage zieht sich auch wie ein roter Faden durch die Handlung. CRUCIBLE OF GOLD erzählt in gewisser Hinsicht die Geschichte eines Mannes, der sich zwischen Pflicht und Gewissen entscheiden muss, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Aber natürlich kommt auch die Spannung nicht zu kurz. Laurence und Temeraire stolpern von einem Abenteuer ins nächste und der Roman enthält zahlreiche packende Wendungen.Die Figuren in CRUCIBLE OF GOLD haben mir ebenfalls gut gefallen. Laurence kämpft wie schon erwähnt des Öfteren mit seinem Gewissen und ist nach wie vor eine sehr sympathische Hauptfigur. Temeraire ist sich im Grunde treu geblieben und die Begegnung mit den Drachen der Inkas erweitert seinen Horizont auf eine interessante Weise. Natürlich gibt es in CRUCIBLE OF GOLD auch ein freudiges Wiedersehen mit Iskierka, Granby, Roland, Riley, Demane und vielen anderen alten Bekannten. Auch die neuen Charaktere haben mir gut gefallen.Das Reich der Inkas mit seiner Kultur und seinen Bewohnern hat mir ebenfalls gut gefallen. Naomi Novik baut hier ein neues, interessantes Puzzlestück in ihren Weltenentwurf ein.Alles in allem ist CRUCIBLE OF GOLD ein spannendes und befriedigendes neues Abenteuer im Temeraire-Universum. Ich freue mich bereits auf BLOOD OF TYRANTS, den vorletzten Teil der Saga, der im August 2013 erscheinen soll. Sehr empfehlenswert!
