After a pilgrimage to India in 1998 Satyaki Kraig Brockschmidt had the opportunity to visit the Bina factory in Delhi and began importing harmoniums on a regular basis. But after being flown halfway around the world most harmoniums arrived at his home in Seattle in less than perfect condition. This gave him abundant opportunities to explore the fine details of the instrument and to find solutions to a wide variety of technical problems. THE HARMONIUM HANDBOOK provides detailed instructions in how to play maintain and repair this popular devotional instrument. It also reveals the colourful history of free-reed instruments such as the harmonium which dates back to the time of Marco Polo. The story behind the modern version of the harmonium is a fascinating testimony to the love skill innovation and intermingling of many of the world's great cultures. THE HARMONIUM HANDBOOK reveals: ยจ The history of the Indian harmonium from Ancient China to Europe and America ยจ The essentials of owning and caring for Indian harmoniums helping them give many years of service ยจ How to play the harmonium in a variety of styles from the simple to the complex including single-note melody melody with a drone chords and other more advanced methods (a complete appendix of chords and chord inversions is provided) Review: A very good book - This is a very good book on the workings of the harmonium. I had two stuck keys on my new harmonium after travelling back to Ireland from Asia with it and nobody in Ireland to repair it for me. After reading this book I was confident to do my own harmonium repair which only took me 15 minutes. Review: Complete and practical - This book is a must for anyone owning a harmonium. It's got all the information I need to restore an ageing harmonium that I've been given and it's a joy to use.

Before you buy your first harmonium, you MUST buy this book.
As a piano player, and owning three digital keyboards, I fancied the idea of getting a harmonium, but knowing nothing about them and seeing this book offered I thought it would be sensible to study it before going off and buying the instrument. I bought it on ABE. It is an excellent book, highly informative, engagingly written, explicitly illustrated, very good value, and for me a GREAT SAVING OF MONEY !!! Before reading it I got very close to spending several hundreds of pounds on something which the book convinced me was totally unsuited to my musical skills and temperament. It showed me that the harmonium is a very lovely thing in the right hands, but that mine are not those hands.

A great introduction (and more!)
This book serves as an excellent introduction to the Harmonium (not least for the trouble shooting and information on repairing your harmonium, which puts this book in the 'one to keep' pile). I would have liked for there to be more music examples, but as a handbook for getting to know your harmonium and what makes it tick (and if it does happen to tick, how to put it right heehee) this book is an excellent choice.
