Fantastic item, read the reviews and was ready for ...
Fantastic item, read the reviews and was ready for the worst but they all work brilliantly, as some of the reviews said make sure you put a hole in the bottom of the bottle so the water flows freely but my daughter told me that you must remove the 'collar' on the neck of the bottle, underneath the lid then there is room for the spike to be tightened, if you don't do this then there is every opportunity for air to get in and the spike isn't able to work properly, it just leaks round the rim. Delivery was earlier than stated. Thank you very much.

Not sure yet
Not sure yet how well these work: it seems they don't work with every sort of bottle (due to variance in the specific design of the screw-top, I suppose). I managed to get it working by bunging some waterproof grease into the thread, otherwise it just leaked out around the top at too fast a rate. Another solution could be a rubber washer but that's really something that should be provided if it's needed. Anyway, when I tried one it just prevented the screw-top from going down far enough to engage the thread in the product. Then it seems that you have to adjust the flow rate with the little knob, but this requires checking how fast the level of water is going down through observation, adjusting the rate over several days until you arrive at the desired result. I haven't gotten to this point yet. I assumed that you have to cut a hole in the base of the plastic bottle, otherwise it seems nothing comes out, but I could be wrong about that. All in all, a fiddly product, with no instructions to help figure it out, lots of guesswork and tweaking going on! One weird thing: there are two little exit holes in the spike, but water only comes out of the upper one...go figure. I think I could design something that works better than this, but I'm not in that business, sadly.

A simple, eco-friendly watering solution.
I'm an enthusiast and I also have an inquisitive mind so when it came to the question of irrigation, I followed the white rabbit down the rabbit hole, just like Alice.I've explored terracotta olla systems, DIY plastic bottle systems, deep water irrigation with PVC pipes and these bottle spikes. From my point of view, these spikes do extremely well for potted plants in non-porous containers (plastic flower containers). Depending on your soil, you may have to play with the valve a little in getting the right flow rate because different soil types have different soil moisture tension levels but they remain a practical, eco-friendly solution that provides water to root zones of plants with perennials being the plant type of choice for use with this irrigation method.I find that these spikes work very well for their price point and design quality. The only drawbacks would be based around the flow rate valve as I would prefer a sturdier valve (think water tap) as opposed to a soft seal and the bottle fitting has to be very specific although this can be easily adapted using an O ring as a gasket but it would have been nice to have an adaptive connection point to fit the wide variety of bottles out there but as I said, these are small points and me just being super specific and picky. For what they are and for the price they are, they will promote solid root growth by delivering water to the root zone of a plant and after all, what more can I want for any container plant? On that note, I would definitely suggest using PVC pipes for deep water irrigation if you are interested in that type of thing. It's just a bigger version of the spikes but cheap as chips.Still, definitely good value for what this product is and way better than a terracotta olla because you get to reuse plastic.

Not that good
They are difficult to set the flow rate correctly: they either don’t release water at all, or empty within an hour or so. They don’t fit well onto bottles and can leak at the neck of the bottle. I would gladly buy similar if they were of better quality. I won’t buy these again. Not recommended.

Potentially useful product ruined by poor quality
Disappointed with these. Firstly, the adjustment knob was missing from one of the spikes making it unusable. When I say 'adjustment knob', I think flow randomiser would be a better description. However tight you turn it water seems to get through. It is also very easy to overtighten, which will presumably strip the thread.A bigger problem is the spikes' attachment to bottles. Whilst the thread is of about the right size (you can attach them to a bottle OK) they do not fit well enough to prevent water leaking. Again very easy to overtighten these too. I tried four or five bottles and in only one case did it make a good enough seal to prevent substantial leakage.Should you have the same problems and wish to persevere with these, you may get some joy by doing this:With an old bicycle inner tube1. Cut a section approx 6mm x 20mm. Fold into a U shape along the long axis and insert down centre of spike so that the adjustment knob tightens into bottom of U shape.2. Cut another section approx 10 mm long in cross-section through whole inner tube (making a doughnut shape). Stretch this over the thread of the bottle and then tighten the spike over that. (My inner tubes were for 25mm tires, others may work too, but not too big). The above two steps mean that the bottles do not empty in 30mins as previously, I now need several further hours of experimentation to see if predictable flow can be achieved.Shouldn't really have had to do / type any of that, should I, Selections UK ?

Worked a treat
Used these to save plants while away for a 5 day trip during a heatwave. They worked beautifully. We used 2 litre Pepsi max bottles and they fit perfectly. Everything was alive when we got back. We used it in flower beds next to specific plants that were new this year so we’re less established and also in individual pots for sunflowers etc. we have now bought more.

Poca fatica e poche pretese
