Fantastic laptop/tablet for travelling - web
Fantastic laptop/tablet for travelling - web, Word, Excel, Powerpoint mainly but copes just fine with editing large numbers of 50Mb-plus photographs.

Edit: Might as well be a paperweight.
Update: flakey power button after one week. Effectively dead after two weeks. This could have been a five star review, so so easily could have been if Linx had make a couple different decisions at least one of which would have had negligible effect on profitability.Pros:-1) Just the right size for what I wanted it for. I don't usually touch anything less than 15" for a laptop or a LOT bigger for a home/office based machine but for the mostly tablet / light computing use I wanted it for, and moved very often... 12" is the best compromise for me.2) Weight, see #1.3) Screen, unlike some reviewers I've had no problems with the screen. Started up at 1920x1080 automatically and looks fine. Web use, emails, pictures and Youtube run nicely enough with a good internet connection.4) Wifi and have been solid enough for me.5) Screen and touch-pad protectors preinstalled.Cons:a) the keyboard 'cover' is not robust. At all. Mine is still working and because I take care of my gadgets, tools and toys it will probably continue to do so for some time. But I can tell just by looking at it closely that many users will kill theirs long before a year is up.b) full sized USB 3.0 ports. I get why you can't have 4/6/8+, but I would have thought two was not unreasonable, one on each side. This point debatable.c) And it's a biggie.... The bottom line.... price. I am okay with this thing not able to handle some of the Workbooks or multi media inserted Word Publishing I do as well as a Surface Pro 4 or even laptop.... But at effectively 300 smakeroonies it's near enough half the price. For half the price I expect at least half the performance.d) Edit: all the rest is irrelevant when the product dies after two weeks.

You get what you pay for.
This is a cheap computer, you can send emails, browse the Web, order shopping online, use office 365 (not installed) play simple games, solitaire ,mahjong etc.If you want a surface pro machine this is not it.I did have trouble with the power lead falling out but after contacting customer service a new one was sent out and so far, seems to be working OK.The keyboard is not great, but it does the job. There is no microphone which I thought would have been standard so no conferencing and why it only gets 3 stars. So, would I recommend it? For under £250 yes.

Broken keyboard within a week...
It was great for the first week. It did everything I wanted. However the keyboard has just stopped working, i have tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to work. I might try and use a micro USB keyboard and see if that works. Personally wished I bought a netbook instead of this. If your thinking of purchasing look at all the other reviews.

A great screen, sturdy. A good alternative to the surface pro. (A new Caveat see update)
I got this in response to the Microsoft surface pro 4 jump £150 overnight with brexit/pound fallout.I thought the resolution was lower at 1200 * 800. So when it lit up at 1920 * 1200p it really popped. The text is really crisp, the video is great on it. the 12.2" screen is a big jump from 10" screen on your lap.I'm a big android fan but I find that there are just some things (proper video editing) that just can't be done on Android yet.On the lap with the keyboard I didn't find it too heavy. However, if the keyboard connection isn't locked down properly it causes interference on the screen. So a tray would work if you've got the right size. The usual microsoft updates take over as the version on the tablet is quite old. But that runs in the background so you can still enjoy a good fiddle on your first day.I'm still in the process of giving it a full test. I'm curious to see how it handles video editing of a medium level.I tried using a external disc writer directly into the usb port. It seemed to flick in and out. However, when I used a multi-port it seemed to handle and recognise that better. These are the usual niggles one gets on a new computer. I will return back with more updates as I go along.Am I disappointed about not getting a surface pro 4? Yes and no. I thought the pro would be a good long term investment in the form factor this piece of kit offers. However, not having the cash on hand, I would have had the hassle of selling a few older phones, smart watches and some other stuff. I'm excited to have this on my desk up and running today! The long term investment was about the screen. I thought 1200*800 would get too dated for my liking. But now it's actually 1920 * 1200p its really a good investment. What really surprised me was just how great and clear the screen is!(not sure if I mentioned that) At the end of the day that was the big appeal of the surface pro as well as the pen. The pen when I tested it in the shop is great. But did you know it doesn't act like a finger touching the screen? No. Neither did I . I tried a flick scrolling on a web page, nothing happened. You can directly touch but it doesn't act like a finger or the Samsung note stylus! So that was a bit of a downer. I used a samsung note 2 for ages and loved the scrolling with the stylus. Similarly the same with the tegra note and the htc flyer. The one other thing you don't get with the Surface pro is a usb port. That port is so useful. Show me a disc writer that works off bluetooth! So you get with the Linx a really great product, reasonable processor, keyboard that docks for £299 versus £849. Also for that price of the Surface pro the keyboard is not included!!I won't list the specs as they are already listed. But one thing about this Linx is the inbuilt bluetooth. Now if you have a computer from around 2013, bluetooth wasn't always included on the laptop. So this meant having a micro bluetooth dongle using one of your ports. The Linx built-in bluetooth makes a huge difference. I happened to have a keyboard, mouse combination to test recently. I've taken the bluetooth mouse and used it for this device. Works a charm.I recently bought a refurbished dated lenovo IBM thinkpad(201) 12.1" laptop. It's a super little thing but I feel the screen lets it down a bit. Also it's still a bit heavy to carry around. I did like the form factor though of 12.1". The resolution of the Linx has made that form factor really come alive! It's night and day between them. The keyboard of the thinkpad is pretty awesome, but the linx keyboard does a pretty fine job. I've tested it out at home on a full sized bluetooth keyboard and that works really well. That's the beauty of having a detachable keyboard and the screen is on it's own. You can mix and match the combination to suit your needs. Going to a coffee bar, you have options. On the train you have options. In front of the dashboard of your car behind the steering wheel you have options(not for long though). Each person probably comes to read a review like this for about 4 different reasons. If video editing on a pro scale isn't something that you need(I have other options but will still test it out(for small edits)) then this beauty will really work for you. I tried out some movie trailers "ghost in the shell" and it looked amazing. Especially on the lap so close! The jump from 10" to 12" is actually a big one when it comes to becoming more immersed.Let's hope you find this product exciting as I have and it generates a lot more reviews.22-01-2017 updateAll positive.I've managed to get the external disc drive working. I think it needed to do some updates and it all came good. I've tested the micro sd card slot and its working perfectly with up to 64gig. I see no reason it wouldn't respond to a 128gig which I might try in the near future. For now I've ordered a 64gig card as the on board 56gig available gets used up pretty quickly if you loading software onto the device and using big video files.Took me a while to get used to desktop mode and tablet mode switches. It affects the presentation on the screen. The bluetooth keyboard I use sometimes and the mouse really make this device run smoothly. I'll say again at this size I'm more than happy with microsoft 10.I also put my finger on why I wanted such a great screen for windows. When you use a modern tablet and smartphone you get used to a certain crispness to your screens. I was finding the 15.6" laptop with a 1200 * 800 resolution to be very dull and uninviting. Plus as I am a producer of Tai Chi DVDS on Amazon I now want the screen to really show me the captured video in all it's glory.I was finding my old PC dull and boring as I mentioned so sometimes it's a good idea to upgrade to something exciting and sexy. This might not last forever but if you are doing visual product design like I am it can really get the juices flowing again.I did attempt a video edit dabble and found that the software was fine but the playback was quite jerky. So I will probably use that sparingly for now. I might try just putting the project together using a step by step approach, compile it and see what comes out and how long it takes.I tested this computer on a burn to Disc of a pre-prepared project which usually takes 13 minutes on an old icore 5. It took 16 minutes. However, I found out later that my project had been copied to microsoft onedrive. So it was using a file that was over wifi ! So that would explain the difference. I will try it again off a local micro-sd card and then finally off the computer itself. However, as the 64gig(actual 56gig) disappears rather quickly I will be sparing with what I put on the hard drive. I've got plenty of external harddrives. I was thinking of running some of my editing jobs exclusively off a external harddrive. That way I can take a project with me and continue on a different computer. I will have to sync the version of Magix Movie edit pro so there is no blip because of versions.Travelling with this device is really a dream. It really is quite light compared to a 12" 2 in one. The battery life so far has been quite consistent to what it tells me at the bottom. I'm currently trying to run it down to 10% so it gets a couple of full charges. I'm also putting it on sleep during the day, and switching it off at night.I tested it running a 17 minutes full HD video off an external hard drive using the battery power off the computer. It did this pretty effortlessly, so that's also good to know because that's a bit of a deal breaker if you taking your kit out to a coffee bar and then finding you are only getting 2 hours because your external devices are draining the battery. Will add to this if anything else exciting crops up. But to some up so far....It's getting better by the day!update: 14-03-17I bought mine from Amazon Prime. I'm not sure why a few reviewers have had problems. It's a shame.Update: 10-06-17Remember when you get that warning to deactivate an external device before removing? Well on this device you must do that or better still switch it off and wait till all lights have stopped flashing out on the external hard drive. One of the big reasons I got this was to organise my files on my multiple external devices. I have a lot of priceless outdoor video footage I use for creating videos and dvds.To my horror I lost all my work. Firstly I made the mistake of cut and paste off an sd card used on a mobile phone. I copied it to my external hard drive. Created folders etc. I tested all my files after my file transfer. They all looked amazing and beautiful. They were taken 2 Thursdays ago on a rare low wind, cloudless day. These days are extremely rare in the UK. I only have about 12 to 15 of them per year if I'm lucky. So they were all cosy in their folders, all done. Successful transfer.And...... I had a back up phone from last year which I used side by side to make doubly sure I got good footage. Successful transfer. So I took out the external devices, removed the sd card back into my phone, put the computer on sleep.I came back to edit the files in the evening and they were all gone. Files from the new phone, files from the secondary phone that I copied over and tested on the hard drive!! Nothing, folders wiped, obviously the sd card didn't have them as I did a cut and paste. These files were the last few on a massive project I was hoping to finish for Amazon prime video! I looked everywhere. I couldn't believe it.I kept my head, my stomach couldn't be controlled and had a sickening feeling in it, but I remained philosophical. That eveniing I thought about it and looked for recovery possibilities. I found a program online, downloaded it. It found my files on the sd card but one was corrupted due to a photo I'd taken after the event. It wasn't a train smash as I'd done the dual filming thing. I then had to cough up £72 to pay for the recovery program. All ended well.So be warned, on this or probably any computer. But it has never happened before, especially when it finished the copy!16/09/2017 updateAfter over 6 months of owning a device like this I've found the following conclusions from my lifestyle:If there isn't a permanent space for this type of device in your home, you are more likely to use your current laptop setup. Mine is not set up in a clear space ready to use. As a result it never gets used! The main reason is I've a small 7" phone/tablet Huawei X2. Most of my surfing, emailing, browsing is done on this device.Should I need a laptop for say video editing, printing things, access to my multimedia programs, I use my Asus laptop, which has priority position in my limited space for a single laptop device.I very rarely have time to take out my Linx for general use in a coffee shop or other out of home requirement.Any video editing project I need to do is better on a larger screen and more powerful laptop.Any video file archiving and backup is done on my laptop. Especially after the mess that happened on this device a while ago.The screen resolution on the linx is much better than my 2013 laptop. So any final viewing of my editing work is useful to do on the linx.I bought this hoping I would be able to do more video editing on the fly when when I'm out of the house. But this linx hasn't the power for that.So if you have the money, need to do powerful processing of video files get something a lot more powerful. But the 12" screen is limiting for that activity.I've no regrets buying this device as I've found that trying out this form factor has been a most useful exercise.Would I save up and buy a surface pro or an equivalent? At this stage I would say no.
