A Handheld History: A comprehensive celebration of handheld consoles and their iconic games from indie journal publisher Lost In Cult : Lost in Cult: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Handheld history book - The recipient loved it Review: A must for the handheld gamer - This is a wonderful book, cataloging the journey through hand held history. It is put together brilliantly detailing the various devices and the versions available. There are some great essays about some devices and individual’s experience using them. This is all bound together in a beautiful hardback cover with fab illustrations and good quality photos. However, I have 2 criticisms. 1, I wish it was put together by device chronologically. I can see that the author decided to organise it by device and then by time however I believe this to be Ill-conceived as the reader misses out on what devices were competing with each other at the same time. And how the technology develops across the whole industry. 2, I believe the author is too young. There is a definite bias towards Nintendo in this book due to the fact that they had established market dominance by the time the authors journey begins with the Game Boy Colour in 1998. Which means the actual game-changer that was the original GameBoy and the Game and Watch devices that lead to it feels glossed over and there is no mention of the Sega Game Gear until page 185. As a lover of all hand-held consoles, I feel that many of the other devices in this book are not celebrated as much as Nintendo products.

A superb premium quality book about handhelds.
You can tell this is written by genuine experts who love what they do. It's a big book, crafted with in-depth research, personal stories, high quality images and superb art. It's also lovely to see names I am familiar with for example Retro Dodo's Brandon, Bob Wulff, Kevin Kenson and even Ashens a awesome YouTuber. I bought it for myself, and i've now bought copies for my friends, it's one of my favourite books. I want a second version!

Love the book but Amazon is a pain
The book is very cool, very happy with it. So detailed, great illustrations. Recommend for all the collectors out there. I am annoyed with Amazon though because I've been watching this book for the past few weeks and the price is flip flopping all over the place. It was full price, then it was €25, then it was €35, then it was €27 when I bought it, it dropped to €21 before it was even delivered and no doubt it'll be back up to full price in a few days. Absolutely ridiculous, you never know whether to buy now or wait and either save or get screwed 🙄

surprised by how small this book is, it includes cool images and interesting information on these handheld gaming consoles

Nice to see such a book out there. While a lot of retro gaming books focus on games and systems, this one has something more to it. Sure, it talks about games and systems like all the other books, but it is also about stories and experiences people had with these systems, which make this book feel much more personal. You'll read stories about kids (back then) wrestling with their gameboy games while in car, using street lights to see the screen. Anyone who own these systems (like myself) back in the days can relate. This book brings back memories. Not just about the consoles, but about our time playing with these back in the days. It's well written, and the pictures are great. Photography is nice. Although the paper it is printed on doesn't give them justice. Still, a recommended read for everyone who was a kid back in the 90s and loved portable gaming.
