What do you mean by automatic? It is battery powered so does not need winding. When the battery runs out it will need a new one. £3-£4 in most outlets. I wear mine every day for work so it is hard use but I am only a couple of weeks in. Overall great value budget watch.

Is the gap between the spring bars and case wide enough to fit a nato/slip through strap?

It's not a big gap. Looking at my own with the strap as you see it which came with it, there's not a lot of clearance. Wouldn't like to say yes and send you on the wrong track.
