Hotpoint 9635
Had this now for nearly two years. Despite it taking one year to work out how to get the dry-only to work, it has been perfect for our needs. We chose it because of its Which recommendation. The standard wash and dry is about 3 hours 45 minutes. Bedding comes out ready to go back onto the bed. Clothes are the same. Towels are dry enough to go into the airing cupboard or even straight back to use. The dry-only function must have been designed by a deranged engineer, with the instructions written by a dyslexic five-year old. Rather than the standard wash-and-dry being able to add some extra drying time, only some (for us) unlikely programmes have that feature. Other reviewers have commented on using the Quick Wash followed by a dry. However, this turns out to be exactly the same duration as the normal wash and dry, so no time saving. Aside from these little personality quirks, the machine is great. No noisier than other machines we have had, certainly a lot less vibration than others and generally just very happy to get on with whatever it is asked to do. And it doesn't dribble water onto the floor. Really quite grown-up.

This is a washing machine with a drying function and not a tumble dryer function.
This is a washing machine with a drying function. The Drying function does not work the same way as a standalone tumble dryer. Drying times on this machine are also far longer than a standalone tumble dryer. The installation documentation and user guides leave a lot to be desired but with a bit of study you can work them out. It produces good results but the operation of it is at first a bit confusing. I have also bought myself a little fisherman's like weighing scale with a hook ( 0 to 10kg) to make sure I get the load weights right. It has the making of a good washing machine. Installation is not difficult but it is very heavy so really a job for two people. As part of the unpacking process you need to put the machine on its side to remove packaging from inside the machine. At this point it will be helpful later on if you loosen off the height adjustable legs and leave them finger tight. Before you can use this machine you must remove four transportation bolts at the back of the machine so you will need to have least an adjustable spanner. - Look at the installation instructions before starting any installation. My first wash (after the machine self wash - see instructions) was to use the Wash & Dry XL Bed and Bath function. Amazed at the time of 9 hours to do the full process but went to bed and let it run. In the morning looked at the results and they were very good. I have since tried other settings (those without the word "dry" in their titles) where you have to add the drying sequence, if you want it. This is done by by pressing the "Drying level" button and selecting the drying level or the drying time (multiple button presses) as you require before starting the wash. If you don't do this the machine will only do a wash and spin. When all the functions are done as one task , Wash, Spin then optional dry, everything works fine. Takes a long time but that's ok for me. My next test was to wash 3 pairs of jeans without setting the dry function and then do a "Dry Only" function on them. To do a dry only function the user guide says to first select a wash function on the dial that resembles the fabrics to be dried, select the dry function and set it to a drying level or a run time as before. Once you have done that then press the "Dry Only" button that will light up. If you now press "start" a drying cycle should start. At this point I expected the machine to in effect become a tumble dryer It doesn't. By pressing the "Dry Only" button, the machine does not do the wash and spin function for the programme selected but it does do a drying function which includes and additional spin process after which it starts the Tumbling drying process. For some reason at the start of this process if "Dry only" is selected the machine spends up to 20 minutes not really doing anything but making a gulping noise. I think it is part of the drying process as the gulp is a little water being put into the pipes. After this time the machine will start with the spin process. Unlike for the wash enabled process this spin cannot be switched off or the speed changed by pressing the spin button. After it has finished the spins the machine does the tumbling drying process as programmed. The final result is good. It takes a little time to get used to but do experiment and find what is best for you.

Washer dryer - 1 star rating
I’ve always bought hotpoint but the dryer on this machine just doesn’t dry the clothes. I also ended up calling engineers due to a fault with the machine. The washing machine settings aren’t eco friendly even though there’s an eco button. Most settings are 3-4 hours washing. I end up using the rapid button most of the time which is 30-45 minutes washing. No half loads, no 90degree wash, just a poor substitute for better models.Hence 1 star rating.

Very nice unit.
I bought this unit for my daughter for Christmas. It was promptly delivered as advertised. A very good quality machine as I would expect no less from Hotpoint. I highly recommend.

Difficult to understand the drying cycles
I've had this product for less than a week and I can't seem to get it to just dry only. I've used the quick wash and dry and the clothes came out very damp. I then took out 3/4 of the load (initial 6kg) and used the dry only cycle for an hour, the machine keeps pumping water into the drum and leaves the clothes even more damp with stream coming out when the doors where opened. It's frustrating. How can I get this machine to do what it says, to just dry my clothes! I'm going to try the full wash and dry cycle that's about 4 hours after which I'll come back for a review. Update The default 3 hours 55 minutes wash dry cycle fits a good job. Clothes wash and dried very well.

Easy to operate, economical and quiet
The last Hotpoint I had was 12 years ago and I remember it lasted 8 years before I felt it was getting a bit tired and not so reliable, so I scrapped it. Well in all that time Hotpoint has really improved their models and this is something else. It is very responsive and the display is nice clear and bright, the controls are simple and it is so quiet. Loads of settings but the eco one with drying is already our favourite. Very pleased and I am sure it will last years. We also paid for unpacking and installation and to be fair, this was never going to be easy as it sits next to another machine makings things a bit awkward. Hence I paid someone else to do it. They did a great job. Moaned a bit, but did it. I would have been worse! All in all, a great experience.

Long cycles, confusing instructions and noisy
As someone else has mentioned, all the wash cycles are long - anywhere from 3 hours to 9 hours! There is a 30 min quick wash and a 45 min wash and dry otherwise you put the wash on and then you choose a wash cycle and press the dry only button. The drying option runs for 30 minutes every time so clothes will come out damp still. After a year of using mostly the 30 min wash cycle and a 3 hour anti stain cycle with the odd dry cycle, the spin function seems to have stopped working so all clothes are coming out sopping wet. I have tried just using the spin cycle and it just doesn't work so will now have to get someone out to fix it. My last washing machine had a 2 hour wash cycle and 59 min cycle and I really miss those. After spending £399 in October 2024, I really need this machine to last longer than just one year!
