Someone to Watch Over Me - Indicator Blu-ray
A film I’ve not really seen in a very long time was more interesting than my distant memory suggested. The basic plot is not the films strength in truth - police detective Tom Berenger is assigned to bodyguard Mimi Rogers’ wealthy heiress who has witnessed a friends murder. He’s married, she’s not. They’re spending a lot of time together…….I imagine you’re already ahead of me.But, it’s still worth a watch, in part, for the stylish presentation of the story. Ridley Scott is a master visualist so that’s no surprise, and it provides a veneer of sophistication but sympathetic actors also mean that as the romantic relationships play out and the characters (who are not bad people; the cop loves his wife, the heiress isn’t a calculating seductress but the affair still happens) cross between two different worlds (the supplementary material strongly endorses the themes of class divide underneath the surface style and the nuts and bolts of the ‘witness in danger’ plot). It’s a classy mood film, which harks back a little to the 40’s noirs and tries to update it for the (then) glossy 1980’s.The extras package is solid - an informative commentary with lots of context and details, interviews on the scripting and cinematography, and an enclosed booklet with essays and interviews. Not a huge volume of material, but interesting.A solid release.

SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME BLURAY from INDICATOR released 17 May 2021
Most if not all the reviews here do not apply to the INDICATOR BLURAY out 17 May 2021. The BluRay is very good quality, though once again I find myself asking if it is notably better than a good DVD. Good sound and subtitles (courtesy of POWERHOUSE FILMS who do so many subs ), and a booklet with cast and credits (like most of these books - don't read til you have seen the film!). I always had a liking for Mimi Rogers and the young Lorraine Braco. Both are very good in their differing ways and roles. Berenger, for some unknown illogical reason somehow gets on my nerves, but ignore that as he is quite perfect as the cop with a lovely family, partner and job he likes. Andreas Katsulas makes scary villain and Jerry Orbach is a convincing cop (he always was!). Dark locations, excellent photography and a solid direction make this a movie worth seeing, even though it may just be a bit dated for some?? Even if it is, it's still one of Ridley Scott's best.

Well worth watching
A very intriguing film noir which starts out laced with occasional humour which later turns into gritty, hard-nosed drama as the plot develops. Berenger's cop is believable and Rogers' rich socialite is beautiful (although the producers could have made more of Mimi Rogers' beauty at times) and the underlying plot of the two becoming attracted (and we assume sleeping together) whilst he is assigned to witness protection after she sees a socialite pal murdered is played out well. As an example of the 80's it favours well the hair and the social glitz and glamour whilst paying good homage to the poorer part of New York. The contrast between Manhatten and Queens and yet their closeness is very evident.Enjoyable might not be the right word to describe a film in which the basic plot is one of a murderer attacking those who might bring him to justice but I did enjoy the hour and forty minutes or so relaxing to watch this film and would recommend it if you fancy a trip back to the 80's and a good thriller to boot.

Still good
Of its time but still looks great. Tension and sexual tension builds nicely. Ending obviously rubbish though.

out of sync
prompted to watch this because director is Ridley Scott, but not one of his best. Think an inferior version of 'Bodyguard'. Got bored with it after 15 minutes, not helped by poor sound sync. It nearly always happens with an Amazon movie. I don't have this problem with Netflix and other streaming services.

Good thriller!
This film isn't new and the main theme in the plot is not exactly original. A happily married detective (Tom Berenger) falls in love with the beautiful, elegant and rich witness to a murder (Mimi Rogers) whom he has been assigned to protect and that puts his marriage, his job and the lives of his wife and son at risk. The good thing about this film is the acting, all the actors are very convincing without ever becoming too melodramatic, and the storyline despite not being original is still interesting.

Excellent transfer
An excellent transfer (seen with my projector), as well as perfect sound. This blu-ray copy (Indicator Limited Edition Region B) of Someone To Watch Over Me is so much better than any of the DVD's I've watched previously. Well worth the wait, especially if you're a Ridley Scott fan!
