Golden Age of Singing 2: 1910-1920 / Various

As the years go by, recordings of singers of the past become cheaper, less bulky to store, and reproduce in better sound. Nimbus Records have developed a method of reproducing recordings from the years before the introduction of electrical recording in 1925. The results are especially kind to singers who recorded in the early decades of the C20th.This double CD presents recordings from the decade 1910 to 1920. The oldest singer represented is the great Australian diva Melba, heard in one of her loveliest recordings - an excerpt from "Louise" by Charpentier. Amongst the youngest is Tito Schipa, aged 24, in an aria from "Lucia di Lammermoor", and Rosa Ponselle as Tosca at the age of 21. Listening to these ancient recordings is a relatively comfortable experience here, but I would caution against devoting a full two and a half hours to listening to all of them in one sitting.J B Steane, the eminent authority on singers of the past on record, provides a superb essay. Full details of the recordings are provided, together with a synopsis of each item. Having provided so much to collectors of historic singers, Nimbus Records is now to close its operations. Collectors should therefore be aware that CDs like this and its companion volumes will soon be unprocurable.

Très beau panorama des années 1910 à 1920 consacré aux voix inoubliables de cette époque de l'art lyrique.Toutes les plus belles voix sont ici réunies(Caruso,Mc Cormack,Clément,Martinelli,Schipa,Gay,Hempel,Melba,Destinn,Ponselle,Ivogun,Onegin,Barrientos,Lehmann, Tetrazzini,Galli-Curci,Kurz).Les dates d'enregistrements ainsi que les numéros de matrices sont mentionnés dans un livret (hélas) en anglais seulement rédigé par un grand spécialiste : John Steane en 2001.Chaque morceau est accompagné d'un synopsis.Quelle bonne idée de retrouver les 50 ans de l'Age d'Or des grandes voix autrefois rassemblé dans un très gros coffret vinyle.

belle compilation de stars du début du siècle avec quelques voix russes moins connues mais comme toujours dans cette collection le son est bon et c est intéressant pour les mélomanes
