Is there a trick to opening the food/escape end as i cant open it?

I personally would return this product. Not very easy to open the back. Only gave 1star rating. Caught two mice, both had their tails cut off by the trap. The sellers tried giving me money for a better review upto £40! But on principle I told them to shove it. Also reported to amazon but clearly nothing was done as this product is still available! Please see my 1star review. Good luck!

Are there any air vents in these traps?

Yes, there are air holes on the door of the trap and some at the other end as well. They are very good traps but they do have to be checked as often as possible or at least once a day. We were checking every day but still had one dead mouse. The other one we caught was fine.

Can it catch multiple mice at a time or does it catch only one at a time?

It will only catch one mouse at a time, but it is effective. I have caught two mice one in each trap and released them alive.

Is this cat friendly?

Yes, the mouse is trapped pending release and the cat can't either be hurt or interfere with the mouse. 'best trap I've bought
